Wednesday 07.08.2013, 15:30Hlinka Gretzky Cup

Welcome. This game starts at 15:30 CEST, 09:30 EDT.

It's the third and final day of the group stage at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup. Canada and Switzerland both enter this game needing a win to advance to the semifinals. Canada opened with a 4-0 win against the Czech Republic but lost 4-3 yesterday to Sweden. The Swiss started with an impressive 3-2 win over Sweden but then blew a late lead and lost to the Czechs 3-2 in a shootout. The Swiss lead the group with 4 points, followed by Sweden and Canada with 3 each and the Czechs with 2. The top two teams advance.

Canada is the home team this game and is wearing primarily white uniforms with red trim, black pants and helmets. The Swiss are wearing primarily red uniforms with white trim, black pants and helmets.

Julio Billia is making his third straight start in goal for Canada--he's second in the tournament with a 2.02 goals-against average. The Swiss, meanwhile, are countering with Kevin Fehr--the first appareance for him. Descloux was impressive for most of their first two games, but was in goal for that late collapse yesterday.

The teams are now taking to the ice, with the opening faceoff about five minutes away. First we'll have the national anthems.

The national anthems of Switzerland and Canada have been played and the opening faceoff is moments away.

Now Billia catches a shoot-in and holds for a stoppage.

    03:37
    Offside Canada.

    05:08
Canada's Joe Hicketts is getting the game's first penalty as his attempt to clear the puck off the class from behind the net went over untouched. Power play Switzerland.

    06:10
Penalty half over, Swiss without a shot yet.

    07:00
Pilon ices and that should about do it for this penalty.

Daniel Audette takes a baseball swing at an airborne puck in teh slot and it goes wide, play continues.

    10:57
Switzerland's Dario Meyer drives McKeown into the goalpost and is called for interference. First power play for Canada coming up.

    11:54
The play is whistled down because Canada's Jake Virtanen was stationed in the goal crease, faceoff outside with 1:03 left in the penalty.

    12:18
Fleury the low shot from the point, deflected on the way and hits Fehr's pad.

    13:00
Swiss kill off the penalty, play now in the neutral zone.

    13:55
Clark Bishop with a big hit into the end boards in the Swiss zone. This game has not been nearly as physical as the Canada-Sweden game yesterday.

    14:40
Brendan Lemieux almost had a breakaway but couldn't find the puck in his skates, McCann took a one time shot finally and Fehr made the save.

    15:47
Swiss dump the puck in and go for a line change, the puck bounces to Billia and he covers it.

    16:00
Swiss player Roger Karrer hobbles off, not sure what happened to him. Play continues . . .

    16:31
Joe Hicketts is sent to the box for the second time today, this time for charging. Swiss 0/1 on the power play.

    17:17
    Goal for Team Switzerland!
The puck is worked from the right wing boards over to SIMON KINDSCHI at the left hashmarks, who beats Billia with a high wrister to the near post. Power play goal. Assists: Cedric Maurer, Julien Privet.

    18:40
    Goal for Team Canada!
The Canadians come out storming after giving up the opening goal. After getting denied on his initial attempt, BRAYDEN POINT made good on his second shot and ties this game. Assist: Spencer Watson.

    19:20
McKeown a shot from the point, stick save Fehr.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

A sleepy start to this game, but after the Swiss opened the scoring on the power play on a great shot by Simon Kindschi, the Canadians came storming back and Brayden Point tied it 1:23 later.

2nd period begins at 16:14 CEST, 10:14 EDT.

The teams are returning to the ice, and the 2nd period faceoff is moments away.

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

    20:37
Canada to the offensive off the drop of the puck, most of the play down low.

    21:15
Aaron Ekblad sneaks in from the point and gets a pair of shots, the second one right on the doorstep, both denied by Kevin Fehr, who's under pressure now.

    22:05
Bishop with a great chance in front on the backhand, couldn't get it over Fehr's stick. Swiss can't clear the zone.

    22:45
Finally a swiss forray into the Canadian zone, I think it was Tino Kessler with the shot, but his jersey is tucked into his pants, making his number unreadable.

    23:11
Now it's the Swiss with some pressure but the puck is deflected out of play, faceoff outside.

    23:40
Timo Meier clocks Rourke Chartier into the boards, then steals the puck and gets a shot on goal.

    24:30
Meier in another collision, this one with Brendan Lemieux in the Swiss zone.

    25:20
Physical play picking up now, Nico Gurtner stands up a Canadian player in the neutral zone. More energy this period.

    26:04
Ekblad a drive from the point, deflected high off the glass.

    26:40
Play in the Canadian zone as two players tangled in the corner in the Swiss zone, Audette is the Canadian player.

    27:46
    Goal for Team Canada!
Impressive Canadian rush led by Rouke Chartier--his weak-angle shot was stopped, but the rebound came in front to SAM BENNETT, and he had time to pick the low corner. Assist: Rourke Chartier.

    28:50
Now a Swiss rush, Sin Schlapfer with the wrister, glove save Julio Billia.

    30:29
    Goal for Team Switzerland!
After a bad Canadian line change where a player had to leave the puck to avoid a too-many-men call, the puck slid all the way to the Canadian zone and there KEVIN FIALA made a beautiful move to his backhand and beat Billia upstairs to tie this game up again quickly. Unassisted.

    32:04
Hitting picking up again, several on that last sequence, Billia catches a long shot from the point and holds on. Swiss definitely matching this Canadian team pound-for-pound.

    32:47
Play is stopped as it's under a Swiss player in his own zone, several players crowd around with sticks under him. Sam Bennett questioning the ref why it wasn't delay of game.

    32:55
Watson makes a nice move with the puck just inside the blueline and fires a high slapper that whistles over the crossbar.

    34:25
Dal Colle from the corner in front to Watson, his one-timer just wide.

    34:37
The Swiss quickly counter and they get a faceoff in the Canadian zone as Billia gloves it.

    35:01
    Offside Canada.

    35:40
Jayce Hawryluk with a big hit on Schlapfer into the boards at the Swiss blueline.

    35:53
Hand pass Switzerland in the neutral zone. After some discussion the faceoff is going to be in the Swiss zone.

    36:40
Canadians with possession around the outside in the Swiss zone, but not penetrating the middle or getting any shots.

    37:13
Now the puck comes out and shot back in offside.

    37:48
    Goal for Team Canada!
After having possession in the zone for ages they finally break through. AARON EKBLAD fakes a shot, moves to elude Swiss forward and scores on a low shot through traffic that I'm not sure Fehr could see. Assist: Joe Hicketts.

    38:20
The play is stopped as we have an injured linesman. He was hit by a shot and shaken up but it looks like he's going to be able to continue. Faceoff at the Swiss blueline.

    39:01
Sam Bennett crosses the blueline and fires a high slapper that Fehr catches and holds.

    39:32
The Swiss are getting a late-period power play as Jake Virtanen is called for roughing after a high hit.

    39:54
Timo Meier gets a shot from a prime location but Billia kicks it aside.

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

The Canadians have a 3-2 lead but don't expect the Swiss to go away. For all intents and purposes, the winner of this game goes to the quarters--Canada's done if they lose in regulation, while the Swiss would need help in the late game if they lose.

3rd period starts at 16:59 CEST, 10:59 EDT.

Teams are back on the ice and the 3rd period will start shortly. Swiss still have 1:32 of power play time left with Virtanen in the box.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

    40:20
Swiss enter the zone, shot by Fiala hits the outside of the net.

    41:00
    Canadians ice, Swiss start back.

    41:33
At the tail end of the penalty Kessler had a shot from the slot, kicked out by Billia.

    42:12
Scramble around the Canadian net, Billia covers again.

    42:23
Canadian rush, Watson wrister and blocker save Fehr.

    43:39
Rourke Chartier with a fake behind the net that almost works, Fehr was going the wrong way and he tried the wraparound but the Swiss goalie got back to the post in time.

    43:39
We've got off-setting penalties on the play, Denis Malgin and Brayden Point for roughing after the whistle.

    44:36
Canada now going to the power play as Swiss defenceman Edson Harlacher scoops the puck over the glass, then looks skyward after he saw what he did.

    44:56
Miscue in the neutral zone almost leads to a breakaway for Switzerland's Pius Suter, but Sam Bennett catches him and trips him. It's a minor, not a penalty shot presumably because Suter was chasing the puck. We have 3-on-3 hockey for :43.

    45:20
Offside Switzerland, still 3 on 3.

    45:50
Now 4 on 4, play in Swiss zone.

    46:29
Shot on goal for Brayden Point, Swiss penalty almost done.

    47:15
Back to 5 on 5 but not for long, delayed penalty to Switzerland.

    47:38
After a lengthy delay with Billia on the bench, Pius Suter is sent off.

    48:55
Shorthanded breakaway for Kevin Fiala, goes to his backhand but I think it was McKeown that got a stick oh his stick to compromise his shot.

    50:00
Swiss back to full strength, they had the best chance shorthanded, now a shot by Malgin.

    50:05
Now a penalty to Canada, as Audette goes off for interference. Swiss won't go away and they're down by only one.

    50:37
    Offside Switzerland.

    52:10
Canada kills the penalty off, and Audette steps out of the box and wins a race for the puck in the Swiss zone . . .

    54:28
    Goal for Team Switzerland!
It looked like Canada was going into a bit of a defensive shell and that may have cost them. After a lengthy stretch without any shots, the Swiss started a play from their own end that finished with a hard shot from the point by captain SIMON KINDSCHI.

    55:20
Hicketts with a shot from the point, kicked out by Fehr.

    57:26
Slapper from Virtanen goes off the crossbar and out of play. Faceoff coming outside.

    57:30
Canada wins the draw at the blueline and the shoot-in also goes out of play. This time the faceoff is at centre ice.

    58:04
    Icing Canada.

Overtime looming, as a wide range of scenarios possible right now as far as making the semifinals.

    58:17
The Canadians go back up ice and point takes a hard shot that Fehr snares. It's clear the Canadians want 3 points from this game.

    58:39
Puck hits a glove at the Swiss bench. Faceoff outside the blueline.

    59:00
Shot by Fiala on a Swiss rush, pad save Billia.

    59:48
Tino Kessler with a wrister from just inside the line gloved by Billia. Nervousness now with the faceoff in the Canadian zone.

    59:48
    Timeout Canada.

Surely this more of a defensive timeout because it's not likely they'll score in regulation at this point.

    59:48
Now Ekblad is being sent back to the bench and Fleury back on. Dale Hunter trying to sneak in a change during the timeout I guess.

    60:00
    3rd period finished.

OK, let's get out our calculator to figure out the possibilities.

With both teams getting a point, Switzerland now has 5 points, Canada 4 points, Sweden 3 points, Czech Republic 2 points. Either Canada or Switzerland will get 1 more point this game. Swedes and Czechs play tonight. Top two teams advance.

We've got 5 minutes of sudden-death overtime coming up, 4-on-4, followed by a shootout if nobody scores.

    60:01
    Overtime began.

    60:30
Ekblad's shot is blocked, Swiss come back . . .

    61:06
Puck out of play at the Canadian blueline, faceoff outside the line.

    61:27
Point to Watson in the slot, but he doesn't get much wood on the shot and Fehr makes a stick save.

    62:20
Fleury the shot from the point, pad save Fehr.

    63:15
Ekblad from the point, another save Fehr as Bishop gets hammered in front.

    63:53
Schlapfter wins a battle along the boards and takes a long shot that sails wide.

    64:19
    Icing Switzerland.

    64:28
    Offside Canada.

    64:35
Ekblad sends a low slapper wide.

    65:00
    Overtime finished.

Canada the more aggressive team that overtime period as they had 4 shots to 0 for Switzerland, by my count.

Shootout coming up, and we'll find out soon who the shooters are. It's 3 rounds, then sudden death if still tied.

If Canada wins, they will be tied with Switzerland with 5 points, Canada holding the tiebreaker on the basis of winning the head-to-head. In that scenario, a Czech win tonight would create a 3-way tie. A Swedish win tonight would mean Sweden and Canada advance.

If Switzerland wins this, they're in for sure and Canada advances if the Czechs win in regulation. The Czechs are eliminated if Switzerland wins, so they're all cheering for Canada for sure.

    Start of shootout.

Canada starts with Spencer Watson, scores!

Pius Suter for Switzerland, sae Bilia again. Canada can win with a goal.

Brayden Point goes upstairs and scores! Canada wins.

    Goal for Team Canada!
SPENCER WATSON gets credit for the game-winning goal.

So Canada and Switzerland now both have 5 points and are tied for 1st in the group. Canada is assured a spot in the quarterfinals because only Sweden can finish ahead of them now and they hold the tiebreaker by beating Switzerland. A Sweden OT win or a Czech regulation win actually creates a 3-way tie--if Sweden, it would be Sweden & Canada. If Czechs, it would depend on the margin of victory, but Canada would be one of the teams as they have the best goals for-against differential in the group.

    Got all that?

Tune into Czech Republic Sweden at 19:00 CEST, 13:00 EDT. (17:51:15)

    Derek OBrien
