Luleå Hockey
Sunday 24.08.2014, 14:35 • National Ice Centre • Champions League

The final buzzer goes at the National Ice Centre, and it's a sad state of affairs for the Nottingham Panthers, who have been simply outclassed by their Swedish opponents, Lulea Hockey. It was close in the first period, as a Brandon Benedict goal brought the Panthers to within one goal after the opening period. However, Lulea scored six times in the second period to blow their British opponents away. Karl Fabricius scored a hattrick, while Cam Abbott, Stephen Dixon and Lennart Petrell had three points each. Lulea top Group K with two wins out of two. (17:01:09)

    Goal for Luleå!
The Swedish side have their ninth of the game and it's by far the scrappiest goal. CAM ABBOTT holds the puck to the left of Raitums, just behind the goal line. He's patient and eventually banks the puck off Raitums' back and over the line. It's his second of the game. Assists to: Stephen Dixon and Olov Lundqvist.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Both teams are out for the third and final period here at the National Ice Centre. It's gone from bad to worse for the Panthers, as they are not only down 8-1, but are now without forwards Chris Higgins and Martin Podlesak, who have picked up injuries.

We'll be back at 16:20 CET for coverage of the third period.

Well well well. There's not a lot you can really say after that. Lulea scored 3 goals in the first three minutes of the second period and haven't looked back, scoring another three to make it a six goal second period. Panthers replaced Craig Kowalski with Martins Raitums, but Lulea have already found their way past the Latvian four times. Karl Fabricius is already on a hattrick, one of the goals being shorthanded.

Nottingham Panthers – Luleå Hockey 1:7

    37:05
Stephen Lee fans on his shot but it falls to Chris Lawrence in the slot who shoots on the turn but it's a great save by Larsson

    36:48
Lachowicz dishes the puck to Colby Cohen at the point. He fires a one timer which Larsson saves

    33:21
    Goal for Luleå!
Thirty seconds later, however, Lulea have their fourth goal of the period and are truly in the driving seat. Cam Abbott's shot is blocked out in front, but STEPHEN DIXON is first to the loose puck and his nifty backhand move fools Raitums, and he buries the puck to make it 6-1 Lulea. Assisted by: Cam Abbott and Marcus Fagerudd.

    32:50
Cam Abbott has for all intents an purposes an empty net to fire at, but somehow he misses the target. Raitums was getting nowhere near that.

    32:40
Penalty against the Nottingham Panthers. Maxime Parent takes a holding minor

    32:00
Good work by Robert Farmer, who wins possession and gains the zone. He finds Evan Mosey hot on his heels, but the defencemans shot goes wide

A hard slapshot from Lulea captain Chris Abbott goes just wide. The tempo has significantly slowed

    30:29

    27:52
End to end hockey at the moment but both teams defences are doing well to limit scoring opportunities. Panthers starting to play with more confidence. The play opens up for Landry down the right hand side but his wrist shot is just wide of the top corner. The Panthers' faithful trying to give their players some belief.

    26:00
Colby Cohen's wrist shot sails wide of the post. I think he was looking for Bruce Graham, Nottingham's 6'5'' forward, to tip that but no dice.

    25:23
Fabricius does well to win the puck back and clear the zone. He's doing it at both ends this afternoon.

    24:59
Nottingham have a chance to restore some pride. Marcus Oskarsson will sit for two minutes. Tripping the call

    24:47
Lulea take the puck offside. They've taken the wind right out of the Panthers' sails.

    24:34
Fagerudd fires a low wristshot from the right point but Raitums gloves the puck

    24:22
Johan Forsberg, who has two assists already, tries to hammer the puck in but he fans on it

    22:42
    Goal for Luleå!
It's now 5-1 to Lulea as Raitums is beaten on his first shot of the game and the Swedish side have two goals in 26 seconds. Pettrell is involved in the build up play once again, finding PETER CEHLARIK who lights the lamp. Assisted by: Lennart Petrell and Jan Sandstrom.

    22:16
    Goal for Luleå!

Nottingham replace Craig Kowalski with Martins Raitums

    20:41
    Goal for Luleå!
Just like that, 41 seconds into the second period, Lulea have the powerplay goal and have retaken a two goal lead. Lennart Petrell dishes the puck from the left wing across the face off goal, and CAM ABBOTT is there to hammer the puck home from close range. The second assist goes to Marcus Fagerudd. Assisted by: Lennart Petrell and Marcus Fagerudd.

    20:33
Landry clears the zone and relives the pressure

Lulea have 53 seconds of powerplay to start the second period

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

The players are out for the second period here at the National Ice Centre.

Shots on goal in the first period:
    Nottingham Panthers 4
    Lulea Hockey 11

Coverage will resume at 14:28 CET for the start of the second period.

Lulea weren't able to create anything except Nakyva's point shot on their powerplay, but they will have 57 seconds at the start of the second period to make the man advantage count.

It's been a decent first period at the National Ice Centre. It looked like Lulea were going to run away with things after six minutes, as goals from Jan Sandstrom and Karl Fabricius put the Swedish side 2-0 up, but the Panthers have rallied back and do look dangerous going forward. Captain Brandon Benedict brought the Panthers to within one with his powerplay goal with three and a half minutes left to play in the opening frame.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    19:55
Good blocker save Kowalski on Kristian Nakyva's slapshot

    18:57
Bruce Graham catches Jan Sandstrom with a knee and sends the Swedish defenceman crashing to the ice. It's given as a tripping minor. Sandstrom is down momentarily but is up on his skates and makes his way back to the bench. Powerplay Lulea

    18:41
Another save by Kowalski, this time on a Marcus Fagerudd wrist shot

    14:47
First penalty called against Lulea. Dean Kukan gets a two minute holding minor. Nottingham to the powerplay

    13:53
It's Mannberg again. The Swedish forward wires a laser of a wristshot just wide. He's looking dangerous

    13:24
Daniel Mannberg burns the whole Panthers team with his speed. He toe drags the puck, cuts from the right wing to centre and fires a wrist shot which clangs off the top of the left hand post. Would've been a highlight reel goal if not for the metalwork.

    11:57
As the penalty expires, Petrell tries to deflect a shot in front of Kowalski. Nottingham's American goaltender kicks it away with his right pad.

    09:58
Lulea's powerplay is dangerous. They scored three times against the Hamburg Freezers with the man advantage

Good hit by Bruce Graham on Marcus Oskarsson behind Larsson's goal

Some space opens up for Robert Lachowicz down the left wing. He fires a wrist shot but it's blocked out in front

    07:21
Lulea gain the zone and it's Cramo Top Scorer Per Ledin powering to the goal. Kowalski saves and freezes the puck as Ledin goes crashing to the ice

    06:15
TV Timeout. Lulea definitely look to have the legs over the Panthers in this one so far. Nottingham head coach Corey Neilson has a lot of work to do

Lulea ice the puck. The Panthers have responded well to the goal

    00:01
    Game started.

The lights are out and both teams are now taking to the ice. Faceoff imminent

Lulea impressed in their 4-1 victory against Hamburg, and made good use of the powerplay. It was a case of the old and the young as veteran forward Per Ledin scored two goals, whilst 20 year old forward Daniel Zaar, signed from Allsvenskan side Rogle in the off-season, added three assists

Champions Hockey League will be back at the National Ice Centre for the second time in three days as the Nottingham Panthers are set to host Luleå Hockey from Sweden. The away side, who finished sixth in the SHL in 2013/14, come to Nottingham after impressing in their opening game against the Hamburg Freezers and currently sit top of Group K after a 4-1 victory. On the other hand, the Panthers will be looking to bounce back after a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Finnish side Lukko Rauma.

The Panthers will be sweating on the fitness of last season’s top scorer David Clarke, but will be looking for Stephen Lee to continue his fine form. Lee will wear the Cramo Top Scorer’s jersey after a pair of goals in the game against Lukko. Panthers head coach Corey Neilson put Lee out on the first powerplay unit and the British defenceman showing that Neilson put his trust in the right place.

It was comfortable for Luleå against Hamburg, as the Swedish side scored four times in the opening period to put the game out of reach. Forward Per Ledin scored twice while Daniel Zaar added three assists. Luleå showed how dangerous their powerplay is, as they scored three times with the man advantage, something that Nottingham will have to be aware with.

The Swedish side will be favourites for this game, especially as they were able to take their foot off the gas in the third period, while Nottingham fought to the bitter end in a losing effort. However, with the home crowd on their side, the Panthers may be able to pull off the upset.

We will bring you all the action will be live from the National Ice Centre in Nottingham as the puck drops at 14:35 CET (13:35 GMT).
