CSKA – Novosibirsk 4:2 (end)
final
CSKA Moscow
4:2 (1:1, 1:0, 2:1)
HC Sibir Novosibirsk
Sunday 28.10.2012, 12:00 • CSKA Ice Palace • KHL

    Welcome. Game starts at 12:00.

    00:01
    Game started.

    6:27
After an uneventful first few minutes of play, CSKA earns the first power play of the game. Safronov to the box for hooking.

    16:24
    GOAL FOR CSKA!

Datsyuk weaved some of his magic, making the sequence possible. Grabovsky with the finish in tight to grab a 1-0 lead.

    18:50
    GOAL FOR SIBIR!

CSKA has played a decent first period for the most part but this one was a breakdown. Krivonozhkin was Johnny-on-the-spot for the goal.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

Apologies for the spotty commentary during the first period. The transmission was lost during segments of the period, but looks to be OK now.

CSKA outshot Sibir by an 11-7 margin in the first period.

    20:01
    2nd period began.

    22:00
No scoring chances or sustained pressure for either team yet early in the second period.

    23:03
Sergeyev to the box for hooking his check down as he came around the net. Sibir to the power play.

    25:05
Home team at full strength. Stana was not really tested.

    26:23
Alexander Radulov showed some of his strength there, bouncing off a defender and centering the puck for a scoring chance. Shot was partially blocked.

    30:00
Midway point of second period and regulation. Sibir nearly had a 2-on-1 rush moments ago but Denisov was able to deflect a stretch pass before the play got by him.

    32;13
CSKA had too many men on the ice for several seconds but somehow the referees let it slide. No penalty called.

They are playing "Moves Like Jagger" during the stoppage of play. Reminds me of this time about a year ago when the Flyers' Maxime Talbot started loudly singing that "Moves Like Jagr" parody version of the song, while then-teammate Jaromir Jagr was being interviewed after a game.

    36:14
Zaitsev with a good takeout behind the Sibir net. There has been hardly any hitting in this game (hardly unusual for the KHL) but that was a nice -- and totally clean -- body check on Grabovsky.

    38:33
Defenseman Denisov pinched up from the point and received a diagonal pass from Alexander Radulov. The initial save was made but Datsyuk spun loose from the defense to claim the rebound and quickly tuck it in the net.

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

CSKA outshot Sibir, 8-6, for the period (and 19-13 through two periods). The game thus far has been rather dull, with the exception of Pavel Datsyuk showing several times why he is considered one of the top five hockey players in the world.

They are showing Elitserien highlights from Sweden with Russian commentary during intermission.

    40:01
3rd period began. CSKA has 1:03 of carryover power play time.

    40:57
    GOAL FOR CSKA!

All the penalty killers' eyes were on Datsyuk once again. He still managed to work free and send the puck to Alexei Marchenko at the point. The point shot got through a screen and went in cleanly with no deflection.

    41:13
Grigorenko off for hooking. Crucial power play coming up for Sibir.

    39:07
Anton Malyshev off for hooking. CSKA to the power play.

    42:32
    Goal for Sibir!

Good puck movement by Sibir leading up to Enlund poking a puck home past Stana.

    49:01
On that sequence, Datsyuk showed off some of his defensive acumen. The forward lifted the stick of a Sibir player and the puck dribbled harmlessly away for CSKA to claim and go the other way.

    52:22
Was just going to comment that Stana hasn't been tested since the last Sibir goal, but then there was a brief flurry in close for Sibir. The Slovak goaltender made two saves and then covered the puck for a stoppage.

    58:00
Two minutes left in regulation. The game's intensity has finally picked up in the latter part of the third period.

    58:42
Sibir pulls goalie for an extra attacker.

    59:46
    GOAL FOR CSKA!

That's as much as you'll ever see Alexander Radulov truly hustle, because he sensed an empty net goal and wasn't going to be denied. He stayed with the play and tucked the puck home after an initial miss.

    60:00
    Game over.

This was a relatively easy win for CSKA. The game was played almost entirely along the perimeter -- normal for the KHL in particular and many European games in general -- and Sibir had absolutely no answers for stopping Pavel Datsyuk. At the CSKA end of the ice, Rastislav Stana went long stretches without saying any shots.

Shots on goal in the third period were 9 for CSKA (29 for the game) and just 3 for Sibir (16 for the game). (14:06:01)
