Sweden2
Saturday 10.11.2012, 16:00 • Turkuhalli, Turku, Finland • Karjala Cup

A game that started out slowly ended up becoming fairly spirited as play continued Tre Kronor only scored a total of four goals in going winless in the three games at Karjala. Back to the drawing board.

By virtue of the regulation win against the Swedes and a shootout win over Russia, Finland finishes second. Russia takes third.

The undefeated Czechs, with three regulation wins, take first place at the Karjala Cup segment of the 2012-13 Euro Hockey Tour. (18:26:37)

    60:00
    Game over.

    59:57
Rinne steers aside a side angle shot in a last-gasp effort by Sweden.

    59:07
Koivu off for tripping. Sweden to the power play, but it's probably too late to make a difference.

    58:49
Wesslau comes off for an extra attacker.

    59:02
Salminen blows a chance at the empty net from point blank range.

    58:30
    Goal for Team Finland!
    Scorer is HAATAJA.

Point blank shot for a power play goal, which will put away the game for the Finns.

    58:03
I was going to say we're in "swallow the whistle" territory, as the referee let a rather obvious (if embellished) tripping penalty on Sweden go. However, a few moments later Fredrik Pettersson got nabbed for high sticking.

    56:16
Swedish D pinching whenever possible now. That was a good pinch by Hedman and some pressure for Tre Kronor. Rinne got a stoppage after gloving a Mårtensson shot.

    55:01
Nummelin and Järnkrok jostled heavily after the whistle. No calls.

    54:00
Play has settled in since the Swedes' two earlier chances -- one was a diving stick save by Rinne, later the puck in the crease.

    48:43
Finland at full strength. Play was ruled no goal (which was obvious) but it should have been a penalty shot for Sweden as the puck was clearly covered in the crease by Jalasvaara. Ref simply missed it, and that part isn't reviewable.

    48:39
Stoppage for a video review. Jalasvaara put his hand down on a puck near the goal line as it slid past Rinne.

    47:15
A flurry of power play chances for Sweden. At least one was partially blocked but Rinne made two very tough stops in close.

    46:43
Interference penalty on Finland's Lehterä in the corner against Landeskog. Sweden to the power play.

    45:38
Good stop by Rinne on a left circle shot by Pettersson.

    44:15
By far, that was Landeskog's most assertive shift of the game. Attacked on the forecheck and later snapped off a shot that Rinne had to fight off .

    43:19
Wesslau carefully handles a Nummelin blast from just over the blueline. The shot had a lot of movement on it, but was unscreened. No rebound.

    42:00
Finland at full strength. Decent offensive zone time for the Swedes but no real good scoring chances except for an early sequence that was blown dead around the net.

    40:01
    3rd period began.

    40:00
Swedes will open the 3rd period on the power play with a chance to retie the game. Tuppurainen got called for a penalty (hooking) attempting to defend the scoring chance at the end of the period.

    40:00
2nd period finished. Much more action in the second period than the rather boring first period.

    39:59
A chance for Backlund just before the period expired. Barely missed the long side of the net.

    37:14
    Goal for Team Finland!
    Scorer is NUMMELIN.

Finns rotated the puck up high. Nummelin took the puck at the right point and skated the puck into the right circle. His wrist shot was on target, trickling over the goal line. Wesslau got a piece of it but not enough.

    36:16
After no penalties early, suddenly there's a parade to the penalty box. Fredrik Pettersson off for high-sticking minor. Finns go back to the power play yet again. They need to capitalize soon with all of these opportunities.

    36:05
    Sweden at full strength.

    35:11
Tony Mårtensson went off on a shorthanded breakaway, but either the puck started to hop on him or he was indecisive about what to do against Rinne. Wasn't much of a shot attempt.

    34:05
Finland's third straight power play coming up. Söderberg going off for hooking.

    33:38
    Sweden at full strength.

    31:38
Mattias Karlsson takes a careless high sticking minor just as his team takes over the momentum in the game. Finland to the power play.

    31:21
    Goal for Team Sweden!
    Scorer is SÖDERBERG.

Rinne failed to cover the rebound on a side-angle shot by Richard Gynge. Söderberg immediately jammed in the puck as it lay in the crease.

    30:51
    Sweden at full strength.

    29:50
Chances for Nummelin and Hagman (rebound) on the power play. It was actually nearly a 5-on-3, as there was a PKer without a stick for several seconds.

    28:51
Finns to get their first power play. Hedman off for slashing.

    27:25
Koivu line generates a 3-on-2 rush with a chance for Hagman near the left post. Wesslau got over and made it a routine save.

Having seen Gabriel Landeskog in a few Allsvenskan games as well as Karjala, I must say that he is much better suited and more effective on the smaller NHL style rink and and North American style than he is in the big-ice game.

    25:26
Finland at full strength. Excellent penalty killing by the Finns. Puck was kept to the outside and nothing got through. Several blocked shot attempts.

    23:26
Väänänen had a bit of a sloppy shift, getting outworked by Karlsson and ended up in the box for a cross-checking minor behind the net.

    22:01
Good shift by the Koivu line. Most of the pressure has been in the Swedish end of the ice early in the second period.

    20:42
Side angle shot that Wesslau swallows up easily.

    20:01
    2nd period began.

There were not many scoring chances for the Swedes in the first period. A wraparound attempt for Mikael Backlund may have been the best chance of the opening stanza.

I apologize for the lack of commentary during the first period. The technical issues should be resolved for the rest of the game.

    18:52
    Home team at full strength.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    16:52
Laakso off for slashing. Sweden to the power play.

    3:46
    Goal for Team Finland!
    Scorer is SALMINEN.

The goal came off a coverage breakdown by Tre Kronor. Salminen got wide open in the lower left circle and was able to measure a shot.

    00:01
    Game started.

The classic Northern European rivalry between Sweden and Finland resumes today in the final day of the Karjala Tournament. The round-robin tourney (named for its Finnish beer company sponsor) is the first phase of the annual four-tournament Euro Hockey Tour, featuring the national teams of Finland, Sweden, Russia and the Czech Republic.

The Czechs have already won all three of their games at Karjala in regulation time. The Russians defeated Sweden in regulation and gained a point from a shootout loss to Finland. The Finns hold two points from their comeback win over the Russians. The Swedes enter today pointless, and with only three goals scored in their two games to date.

The Euro Hockey Tour consists of the Karjala Cup (conducted primarily in Finland), the Channel One Cup (Russia), Oddset Hockey Games(Sweden), and the Kajotbet Hockey Games (Czech Republic).

While victory is always desirable, the over-arching goal of the teams is to assess candidates and prepare for the IIHF World Championships in the spring of 2013.
