Thanks for following. Don't forget to come back for more action from the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm and Helsinki, including two more games today! (18:51:03)

The Czechs win the shootout, but their scoring woes continue, as they've now scored only 6 regulation goals in 4 games. The 2 points give them 5, and they remain in 5th place in the Stockholm Group, 1 behind Norway.

Denmark now has 3 points, tied for 6th in the group with Belarus.

Players of the game: Denmark: goaltender Simon Nielsen. Czech Republic: defenceman Zbynek Michalek.

    Game over.

Zbynek Irgl gets credited with the winning goal for scoring the shootout winner.

Game over, as Ondrej Pavelec makes a pad save off of Julian Jakobsen.

Zbynek Irgl again, beats Nielsen 5-hole.

Morten Madsen scores, sliding the puck through the pads. Round 6 ahead.

Zbynek Irgl scores with a beautiful forehand deke, and the pressure is now on the next Danish shooter.

Kim Stall had Pavelec going down and tried to go upstairs but Pavelec got a stick on it. Round 5.

The order is reversed and Hudler shoots again, this time he hits the post. Denmark can win it with a goal.

Jiri Hudler has to score for the Czechs and he does, going 5-hole. The shootout continues.

Morten Green is stopped by Pavelec keeping this game alive.

Zbynek Irgl is the 2nd Czech shooter, goes to the backhand and misses, meaning Denmark can finish this with a goal.

Kim Staal is Denmark's second shooter, pad save Pavelec.

Jan Kovar shoots first for the Czechs, tries to deke but Simon Nielsen makes a great pad save.

Denmarks shoots first, it's goal-scorer Martin Poulsen scores again, beating Pavelec stick side.

    Start of shootout.

This game will be settled by a shootout. 3 players for each team will shoot, unless the difference is too great to be overcome, and if it's still tied it will be sudden-death. Unlike in the NHL, the shooting order is altered every 3 rounds, and all players become available to shoot again.

Shots on goal in overtime (and the game): Czech Republic 3 (31), Denmark 0 (19).

    65:00
    Overtime finished.

    64:34
Caslava takes a long shot on goal from the neutral zone in the dying seconds of the power play.

    64:09
Michalek with another shot attempt that's blocked, then Smid's shot is deflected out of play. :27 left in the penalty.

    63:25
Denmark ices it, the Czechs start back up ice . . .

    62:53
Smid to Michalek for the one-timer, it hits Nielsen and deflects out of play. Faceoff inside.

    62:36
    Timeout Denmark.

    62:36
The Czechs getting a power play in overtime, as Jesper Jensen is goin off for tripping--Tomas Fleischman steps on his stick along the boards. The Danish bench is not happy with the call.

    61:00
Hubacek to Hejda at the point, he slaps the puck wide.

    60:20
Denmark goes on the early attack Larsen takes a slapper from the point, deflected wide.

    60:01
    Overtime began.

Both teams gain 1 point and will play for a 2nd. Clearly, Denmark is happier about that than the Czechs. We'll have a 5-minute sudden-death overtime period of 4-on-4, followed by a shootout if nobody scores. The period will start shortly.

Shots on goal in the 3rd period (and game): Czech Republic 11 (28), Denmark 10 (19).

    60:00
    3rd period finished.

    59:35
Long high shoot-in caught by Pavelec, he puts it back in play.

    58:51
    Icing Denmark.

    58:10
Off the faceoff, Morten Poulsen attempts a wraparound going for his 2nd goal of the period, denied by Pavelec.

    58:00
Now a scary moment for the Czechs. A harmless-looking long shoot-in from Madsen is played a bit casually by Pavelec and Staal just about pokes in the rebound.

    57:30
The Czechs trying to go back to the attack to salvage 3 points, but the Danes defending furiously, not allowing anyone to get a foothold in front.

    55:55
    Goal for Team Denmark!
The Danes tie this game. A great effort from Kim Staal, who circles the net and feeds MORTEN POULSEN at the far post for the tap-in. Assist: Kim Staal.

    55:25
Petr Caslava takes a high shot from the point that's deflected in front by the high stick of Jiri Hudler. The play is then called when the Czechs get possession. Faceoff outside.

    55:16
Puck deflected out of play in the Danish zone. Faceoff inside.

    55:06
    Offside Czech Republic.

    53:49
Martin Hanzal with the steal in the Danish slot and gets a shot. Nielsen covers it as the puck is pushed across the line. The referee says no goal as the whistle went, but the Czechs feel it was a quick whistle.

    53:03
Finally Pavelec covers the puck. The Danes making their biggest push of the game--they have to.

    52:37
Denmark with their best chance of this game. Phillip Larsen with a wrister from the point is stopped, and then Mikkel Boedker on the rebound hits the post with Pavelec down and out.

    51:45
Koukal and Fleischmann with some nice passing in the attacking zone, but it doesn't result in a shot.

    50:35
Denmark with a shot from the boards, stick save Pavelec.

    49:08
Petr Koukal took a high shot that hit Nielsen in the chest, the puck is cleared and then the Czechs are called on the offside.

    48:18
    Icing Czech Republic.

    48:10
Once again, the Czechs not able to get much going on the power play, so the Danes, who have been on the defensive all game, will now try to generate some offence.

    46:05
Just after the goal, the Czechs are going to the power play as Oliver Lauridsen took a chop at Irgl. Let's see if their power play is better with some momentum behind them.

    45:52
    Goal for Team Czech Republic!
Just after a great Danish chance, the Czechs come back the other way and score. It wasn't their most dangerous chance of the game, but defenceman ZBYNEK MICHALEK took a slapper from the top of the circle that beat Nielsen high to the glove side. Assists: Petr Hubáček, Ladislav Šmíd.

    44:26
Nichlas Hardt cuts hard to the net and gets a backhander on Pavelec, that he stops. He then crashes into the net and the puck is put in just after it's disloged. No goal, just 6 seconds left in the Danish power play.

    43:40
Denmark is now at full strength and they'll go to the power play for :51.

    43:20
Big slapper from the point by Smid is kicked out.

    43:00
Hubacek tries to feed in front to Irgl, the puck deflected away.

    42:30
And now the Czech power play is over, as captain Jiri Novotny is called for interference at the blueline. We'll have 4-on-4 for 1:09.

    41:45
The Danish PK continues to impress. Aside from an early charge to the front of the net while 2 men down, they've kept the Czech power play to the outside and sent them back to regroup several times.

    41:10
The Czechs go to the attack, the first penalty is already over, but they still have over 3 minutes of power play time.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

The teams are returning to the ice for the 3rd period. Denmark has two players still in the penalty box, one of them a double minor, so the Czechs remain with a 2-man advantage for :04 and will then remain on the power play, barring any goals or more penalties, until the 3:42 mark.

They're unable to, however. The 2-man advantage will carry over into the 3rd period. The horn couldn't come soon enough for the Danes, who played the way they wanted for most of the period but were starting to feel the heat late. Killing off what remains of the penalties early in the 3rd will be key for them.

Shots on goal in the 2nd period (and game): Czech Republic 10 (17), Denmark 5 (9).

3rd period begins at 17:53 CEST, 11:53 EDT.

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

    39:42
The Czechs are going to finish this period 5-on-3, as Stefan Lassen catches Jiri Hudler in the face with the stick. He's getting a double minor, which could carry over well into the 3rd period. They'll try to put on some pressure and get on the board before the intermission.

    39:25
Voracek winds and fires a slapper from the point, deflected just wide.

    38:55
Tenkrat with a shot on goal, save Nielsen, puck cleared.

    38:04
Czech 2-on-1 for Voracek and Hudler, but Phillp Larsen, attempting the sweepcheck, misses the puck and takes out Voracek's skates and he's called for tripping. Not was he was trying to do, but probably a good penalty nonetheless.

    37:07
Julian Jakobsen with a long shot from the blueline, stick save Pavelec, who covers.

    36:46
    Icing Denmark.

Apparently it was tipped, as the faceoff is being moved to centre ice.

    36:30
Long slapper from Petr Vrana, pad save Nielsen.

    34:50
Green the shot, the rebound is shot just wide, and the play is stopped as there was a Danis player trapped in the crease. Faceoff outside.

    34:23
Petr Koukal attempts a wraparound but he can't stuff it in past Nielsen. We've got some pushing and shoving after the whistle.

    32:44
Hanzal with a shot from the boards, relatively easy glove save for Nielsen, who gives up no rebound.

Hanzal apparently alright, as he was seen limping off the ice at the end of the 1st period.

    32:05
Voracek feeds Hudler, who fires just wide, and the puck caroms off the boards to Nielsen, who covers.

    31:34
Offside Denmark. Shots are 4-3 for the Czechs this period, 11-7 overall. As I said earlier, exactly the kind of game Denmark wants to play.

    30:19
Now Poulsen gets a shot and Pavelec saves it and holds on.

    29:52
An errant pass goes into the neutral zone, which kills the remaining time of the penalty. I don't think Denmark got a shot--there was 1 blocked.

    28:58
Denmark shoot-in goes out of play. Faceoff outside the line with :54 left in the penalty.

    27:52
Denmark goes to the power play now as Jakub Nakladal gets his stick tangled between the legs of Jesper Jensen and takes him down. Tripping is the call.

    27:19
The Czechs finally get a good scoring chance this period and it's very nearly a goal. Jakub Voracek beats a defenceman and passes to Jiri Tlusty streaking down the wing--he takes a one-timer that looks labelled but he's absolutely robbed by the glove hand of Simon Nielsen. Fantastic save.

    25:55
Race for the puck in the Danish zone, goaltender Simon Nielsen gets to it just ahead of Petr Hubacek, who had a chance for a breakaway. Then the puck is brought back in with Hubacek trapped inside--offside Czech Republic.

    25:08
Now the puck slides to Pavelec--he scoops it up and holds on.

    24:40
    Offside Denmark.

A news flash from Helsinki--France beats Russia 2-1! Unfortunately, we have no coverage of that game.

    24:10
Oliver Lauridsen of the Philadelphia Flyers takes a slapshot on a Danish rush, blocker save Pavelec.

    23:45
A long Czech dump-in goes on goal and Nielsen covers it.

    23:15
Now we get a Danish offside.

    22:30
The dump-and-chase game continues. A long stretch of play without any stoppages or shots.

    20:27
A long shot from the point is gloved and held by Pavelec. Just :02 left in the penalty now.

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

The teams are back on the ice and the 2nd period will begin shortly. Denmark starts the period on the power play, as there is still :29 left in Ladislav Smid's hooking minor.

Denmark has to be pleased with their first period, as they did a great job of limiting the number of shots and scoring chances, even when shorthanded. They remain on the power play for the first :31 of the 2nd period.

Shots on goal in 1st period: Czech Repblic 7, Denmark 4.

2nd period begins at approximately 17:04 CEST, 11:04 EDT.

It looks like Martin Hanzal is favouring his leg or knee as he leaves the ice--he may have blocked a shot on that penalty kill.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    19:37
Petr Tenkrat with a partial break shorthanded, takes a long slapper that Nielsen saves easily.

    19:13
Morten Green with a slapper from the point, save Pavelec, puck cleared.

    18:29
The Czechs in a bit of trouble in their own zone, and Ladislav Smid takes a hooking penalty. We get our first look at the Danish power play.

    18:23
Now Denmark hits the post, not sure which player.

    17:00
Defenceman Zdenek Kutlak shoots from the point and hits the post--the second goalpost for the Czechs today.

    16:48
A shot from Green, might have been headed wide but Pavelec catches and holds it. Green leads this Danish team with 2 goals so far in the tournament.

    16:38
A Czech shoot-in goes out of play. The faceoff will be at centre ice. Shots on goal still only 4-3 for the Czechs.

    15:45
Nakladal with another point shot for the Czechs, then the puck is iced but it goes right on Pavelec so play continues.

    15:00
Scramble in front of the Czech zone, the dangerous Morten Green took a whack at it and the puck slides just wide.

    14:15
A promising looking Czech rush, but the pass was just out of the reach of Hubacek.

    13:40
Denmark back to full strength--they again limited the Czech power play to just 1 shot.

    12:58
Puck deflected out of play by a Danish stick. Faceoff in the Denmark zone with :38 left in the penalty.

    12:25
Jakub Nakladal with a one-time blast from the point, kicked out by Nielsen.

    11:36
The Czechs going to the power play for the 2nd time as Morten Green is called for slashing in the neutral zone. They may have to take penalties to contain the more talented Czechs, so the Czechs are going to want to get their power play going.

    11:25
    Offside Denmark.

    11:00
Denmark doing exactly what they want to do so far in this game--slow down the pace and keep it along the wall and in the neutral zone. Shots are still only 3-3.

    10:12
    Icing Czech Republic.

    08:45
Denmark has killed off the penalty, the Czechs are 0/1.

    07:40
Nakladal across to Voracek, who's playing the point on the power play--his long slapper is kicked out by Nielsen.

    06:55
Hudler's quick shot from the slot is blocked and the puck is cleared. Hudler has 3 of the Czechs' 5 goals so far in the tournament.

    06:31
The game's first penalty is going to Denmark's Julian Jacobsen for holding Tomas Hertl in his own zone. They're playing strong defence in the early going, but the Czechs are going to get a chance to get things going on the power play.

    06:03
Martin Hanzal's slapper whistles just wide and deflects out of play. Faceoff outside the Denmark blueline.

    05:06
The puck is deflected into the Denmark bench. Faceoff at centre ice.

    04:08
Right off the draw, Tomas Fleischmann goes hard to the net and there's a scramble in the Danish crease, Simon Nielsen covers it for another stoppage.

    04:02
Radim Vrbata gets the Czechs' first shot on a rush from the left wing, and then the Danes ice the puck.

    03:21
And now another Danish shot as Julian Jacobsen cuts out of the corner and shoots on Pavelec, who holds on for a stoppage.

    02:55
Denmark's Nicholas Hardt gets the game's first shot on goal, a one-time wrister from the slot, and Ondrej Pavelec makes his first save of the tournament.

    02:33
Offside Denmark--a shoot-in with a player trapped inside. Still no shots for either team in this game.

    02:19
    Offside Czech Republic.

    02:03
    Icing Denmark.

    01:51
But a turnover at the Danish blueline and Zbynek Irgl is in alone. He hits the goalpost and then the net is dislodged by a sliding defenceman. So the game is still without a shot on goal and the faceoff will be in the Danish zone.

    01:38
Offside Denmark. Almost 2 minutes in and still waiting for the game's first shot. A lot of neutral zone play and dump-ins.

    00:01
    Game started.

The national anthems of the Czech Republic and Denmark are complete, and the opening faceoff is moments away.

The teams are on the ice waiting for the national anthems. The Czech Republic is the designated home team and will get last change. They are wearing red jerseys with blue and white trim, red pants and blue helmets. Denmark is wearing white jerseys with red trim, red pants and helmets.

This Stockholm group match-up features 5th-place Czech Republic vs 7th-place Denmark. The Czechs, with 3 points in their first 3 games, Can move into a 4th-place tie with Norway with a win, while Denmark (2 points in 3 games) could leap-frog over two teams and land in 5th with a win.

This marks the first appearance of Czech goaltender Ondřej Pavelec. The Winnipeg Jet was named to the team immediately after the end of the NHL regular season but he suffered a shoulder injury in practice and missed the first three games. He was brilliant in 2011 in Slovakia when the Czechs won bronze. For Denmark, Simon Nielsen starts in goal. In two previous starts, he stopped 48 of 53 shots and picked up the Danes' only 2 points so far in a 3-2 overtime win over Slovenia.

The Czechs are led in scoring by Jakub Voráček and Jiří Hudler with 3 points each so far--Hudler has scored 3 of the team's 5 goals so far, and the team will try to generate offence from more sources today. 11 of the 23 players in their lineup come from the NHL, third-highest of any team in the tournament, with 5 more from the KHL.

Kim Staal leads Denmark with 3 points, while Morten Green leads with 2 goals. The team has 3 NHLers in its lineup today--defencemen Phillip Larsen of the Dallas Stars and Oliver Lauridsen of the Philadelphia Flyers and forward Mikkel Boedker of the Phoenix Coyotes. The team will soon be joined by Nicklas Jensen of the Vancouver Canucks, but he won't play today.
