It wasn't a brilliant game but a deserved win for Spain against Uruguay. The current World Champions controlled the match relatively easily before they took a foot from the gas during the last 20 minutes. They were punished for that when Luis Suárez scored via direct free kick but in the end they defended the 2-1 and lead group B now with 3 points.

    Game over.

    90+4
Spain controlls the ball easily deep inside the Uruguayn half. Nothing should happen in the remaining seconds anymore.

    90+2
Soldado was through alone after a nice through ball and just before the border of the 18-yard box he was fouled very clearly by his opponent – should have been red card and free kick but the Japanese referee signalled no foul...!!

    90
Four minutes are added to the game.

    89
Free kick on the other side of the pitch by Sergio Ramos, goes at least 10 metres over the crossbar. Maybe next time American Football for him.

    87
    Goal for Uruguay!

Out of nothing, nothing, nothing the underdogs from Uruguay cut the Spanish lead to the half! Liverpool striker LUIS SUAREZ with a brilliant free kick goal from about 25 metres distance into the left bottom corner! No chance at all for Casillas!

    85
Not much time left in this game and the first spectators already left the stadium. Nobody really believes in a comeback by Uruguay.

    82
Harmless shot on goal by Soldado from about 22 metres distance, no problem for Muslera.

    81
And as announced Pedro leaves the pitch. Chelsea's Mata gets 10 minutes.

    80
Pedro has had cramps multiple times in recent minutes. Doubtful if he can continue. Spain have one opportunity left to make a change.

    78
It's a bit like a training match in this second half for Spain. The resistance by Uruguay is very limited and they are not forced to work hard.

    75
Second change for Spain. Barca legend Xavi leaves the match for Javi Martínez who won the triple last season with Bayern Munich.

    73
The free kick was executed by Diego Forlán but went wide significantly.

    72
Heavy entry by Sergio Ramos with both legs first 28 metres in front of the Spanish net. The Uruguayans are furious – and they are absolutely right – but no card shown by the referee...

    70
Arbeloa (Spain) sees a yellow card for a brutal entry from behind in the midfield.

    69
Last possible change for Uruguay. In the match now is their football legend Diego Forlán who is the substitute for Diego Pérez.

    67
Fast pass for Cavani, no chance for him to reach the ball.

    66
Spain are investing less in this match currently and leave Uruguay a lot of space – maybe too much.

    64
The Spanish team also with their fist change. Santi Cazorla is now in for Cesc Fábregas.

    62
Second change by Uruguay. For the tonight rather weak Gargano it is Lodeiro who enters the match.

    59
Cavani received a ball at the left side of the Spanish box but waited and waited and waited... until the ball was stolen from his feet.

    58
Uruguay are prepairing their second change.

    57
Foul against Pedro Rodríguez but the following free kick from a central position – about 22 metres – by Xavi goes straight into the wall and almost leads to a counter attack by Uruguay.

    55
Iniesta with a brilliant solo run just in front of the Uruguayan box, his shot goes wide past the right bottom corner.

    53
Tactical foul by Busquets but again no card shown. The Japanese referee Nishimura has a rather "English" style of refereeing.

    51
Brutal kick by Maxi Pereira from behind into the legs of Iniesta. No card but the referee gives him a last warning.

    49
After a flat cross from the right side of the Uruguay box, Soldado just missed the ball!

    48
In the first minutes of the second half we have a picture just like in the previous half. Spain is controlling everything very easily.

    46
First change of the match. Álvaro González is the substitute for Gastón Ramírez.

    46
    Start of 2nd half.

Spain clearly dominated the first 45 minutes and gained a deserved 2-0 lead through goals by Pedro and Soldado. They even could have scored more often but Fábregas (left goal post) and Piqué (goalkeeper) were stopped in the last moment. Stay tuned for the second half!

    1st halftime finished.

    45
One minute is added to the first half.

    45
After a long ball Fábregas wins a corner in the duel with Pereira.

    43
Another corner for Spain, earned by Alba, but no chance.

    41
The following free kick cross from the left wing by the Spaniards was blocked by the defense.

    40
Diego Lugano (Uruguay) gets a yellow card for hitting Soldado into the face with his hand. Very unnecessary.

    38
The following corner by Xavi from the left side came to Piqué whose shot from short distance was just blocked by Muslera in the very last moment! What a chance!

    37
Distance shot by Pedro which is deflected by Diego Pérez – corner for Spain.

    35
Piqué (Spain) is booked for holding his opponent Luis Suárez in the midfield.

    34
The fans in Recife are celebrating the Spanish team with "olés".

    32
    Goal for Spain!

Brilliant through ball by Cesc Fábregas from a central position for ROBERTO SOLDADO who leaves Muslera no chance at all with his shot at height of the penalty point!

    30
Offensive foul by Soldado against Lugano.

    29
After a free kick by Luis Suárez it was Cavani whose header went towards the Spanish net – easy save by Casillas.

    28
Jordi Alba goes down in the midfield and claims to have been hitten in the face by his opponent. And yes he received an elbow check by Cristian Rodríguez....

    27
Edinson Cavani (Uruguay) gets the first yellow card of the match for using his hand in the face of Ramos.

    26
Free kick by Xavi from about 22 metres distance, goes half a metre over the left top corner.

    25
Uruguay is finding a bit better into the match now with standard situations but still they haven't created any danger so far.

    23
Luis Suárez with a lot of optimism, goes into a duel with three denfesemen and in the end he even wins a free kick for his team inside the Spanish half.

    20
    Goal for Spain!

With their first corner of the match the Spaniards get in front! The first ball was blocked by the defense but then PEDRO RODRIGUEZ tried it with a hard shot from a central position from about 20 metres distance towards the right bottom corner that was deflected into his own net by Lugano!

    18
Flat cross by the Spaniards from the left side of the Uruguay area towards the six-yard box and Soldado just misses the ball. Again the service came from Alba.

    16
Harmless looking shot by Iniesta from about 18 metres distance but Muslera had a lot of trouble to clear the situation and almost boxed the ball into his own goal.

    15
Cavani tries to get speed into the Uruguayan game on the left wing but his pass to Luis Suárez then is blocked.

    14
A lot of space for Uruguay in the midfield but instead of trying it with a counter they use a high ball that is stopped by a defender.

    12
Back heel attempt by Fábregas deep inside the Uruguay half but the ball is intercepted.

    12
Iniesta with the ball inside the area, is stopped by the Uruguayan defense.

    10
Out of the blue Spain have the first big, big opportunity of the match! Cesc Fábregas received the ball at the border of the Urugay area and then tried it with a fast shot that hit the left post! Muslera would have had no chance at all to avoid this goal if it was placed better!

    9
The South Americans try it with a long ball that ends up in front of the feet of a Spanish defender. So far Uruguay looks a little helpless.

    7
A beautiful solo by Iniesta inside the Uruguay half but in the end he had no team mate around him who could have helped him and he lost the ball.

    5
Fábregas and Soldado wait inside the Urugay area and miss a cross by Jordi Alba from the left wing just by inches.

    5
Uruguay stands very deep in their own half in these first minutes which already earns them negative feedback by the fans.

    3
Spain start with a lot of ball possession in the midfield and many short passes. They also play a 4-3-3 system as FC Barcelona does which is no surprise as 7 out of the 11 players on the pitch for Spain are players from Barcelona.

    1
    Game started.

    Starting lineups:

Spain: Casillas – Arbeloa, Piqué, S. Ramos, Alba – Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta – Fábregas, Soldado, Pedro

Uruguay: Muslera – Cáceres, Godín, Lugano, M. Pereira – C. Rodríguez, Gargano, D. Pérez, G. Ramírez – Cavani, L. Suárez

    Referees: Yuichi Nishimura

Current World champions Spain start their Confed Cup adventure against Copa America champions Uruguay for the first match in group B. In their preparation for this tournament Spain couldn't convince in test matches against Haiti (2-1) and Ireland (2-0). For Uruguay the preparation was a lot more successful when they beat favourites France in a test match (1-0) before beating their direct competitors Venezuela (1-0) to keep their chances in the South America WC qualification alive.

From their rosters Spain are the favourites but Uruguay also showed their class at the highest level in the past years. If one of the teams can get a very important win for the start, we'll see soon.
