CSKA are only 7th in Western Conference after 14 games with 21 points and a three-point advantage towards the first non-playoff spots, currently held by Atlant Mytishchi and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
For Traktor the start was even tougher and they only managed to get 15 points in 11 games for a disappointing 9th spot in Eastern Conference, one point behind Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk who hold the last playoff position.
During a recent five-game road trip CSKA only managed to get 5 points against several teams who are seen by experts as the weakest in the league when they faced Vityaz Podolsk (2-3), Admiral Vladivostok (2-4), Amur Khabarovsk (3-1), Metallurg Novokuznetsk (3-2 OT) and Sibir Novosibirsk (2-3) before they started a four-game home stint with a win against Salavat Yulayev Ufa (3-2).
After four consecutive home wins, Traktor Chelyabinsk were beaten three times in a row by Metallurg Magnitogorsk (0-5) at home, Salavat Yulayev Ufa (1-3) on the road and again Metallurg Magnitogorsk (0-3) on the road.
CSKA's top scorers currently are Nikolai Prokhorkin (11 pts), Ilya Zubov and Alexander Radulov (both 9 pts) and Igor Grigorenko (8 pts). Both goalies Ilya Proskuryakov and Rastislav Stana have a goal against average below 2.40 and a save percentage higher than 90.5%.
The only player that really had an offensive impact for Traktor by now is Petri Kontiola (10 pts), followed by Andrei Kostitsyn (6 pts) and Lauris Darzins and Dmitry Ryabykin (both 5 pts). Michael Garnett played all 11 games as starting goalie for Traktor and recorded a 2.71 goal against average and a 91.2 save percentage.
Which one of the two teams will be able to collect an important win in their fight for the playoffs, we'll see soon!
