Tuesday 19.11.2013, 19:00 • Tipsport Arena, Prague • KHL

That was certainly an exciting hockey game from Prague, in which we saw strong goaltending at each end and two great goals late that were as beautiful as they were timely -- Jiri Sekac's equaliser and Talgat Zhailaunov's overtime winner, his 2nd of the game. (21:29:20)

    Game over.

    64:35
    Goal for Barys!
A great play by TALGAT ZHAILAUNOV to end this game, driving in from the blueline and going high stick side on Vehanen under the crossbar.

    63:43
Finally Vehanen catches the puck and holds it for a faceoff in the Lev zone.

    63:30
Bochenski tries to cut in on goal but he's wrapped up and stripped of the puck.

    61:42
2-on-1 Barys, Dmitri Upper elects to shoot but hits Petri Vehanen in the shoulder.

    61:25
Almost another amazing individual play by Jiri Sekac, cutting out from down low and trying to stuff it in while being checked. Yeremeyev stops him on the goal line.

    60:30
Novotny fires a shot high and wide.

    60:01
    Overtime began.

It seems that the string of dramatic finishes here in Prague continues, as for the fourth game in a row the game will be decided after the 57:00 mark.

Both teams get 1 point and will now battle for the third one. We'll play 4-on-4 sudden death overtime, which will start shortly. If nobody scores, a shootout will settle this game.

    60:00
    3rd period finished.

    59:43
Topi Jaakola sent a wrister from the point that went just wide of the post and, judging from Yeremeyev's non-reaction, he didn't see it at all. Didn't miss by much.

    59:36
Jakub Klepis takes a long shot that Yeremeyev stops and covers.

    59:14
    Offside Lev.

    59:07
    Goal for Lev!
What a play by JIRI SEKAC! A great solo effort in which he takes the puck at the centre red line, carries it down the boards, cuts to the front of the net, fends off a check and backhands it inside the near post. Unassisted.

    58:30
Puck back in the Barys zone and Vehanen goes back to the bench.

    58:24

    57:49
Barys ices the puck right off the draw, goes wide of the empty net. Faceoff comes back down in their zone.

    57:42
    Timeout Lev.

Vehanen is going to the bench for a 6th attacker with over 2 minutes left.

    57:42
Shot attempt from Nakladal at the boards hits a stick and pops up into the air and is caught and held by Vitali Yeremeyev.

    54:19
    Icing Barys.

    54:13

    Icing Barys.

    40:20
A high hit by Konstantin Rudenko knocks off Justin Azevedo's helmet, and he wisely skates directly to the bench to avoid a penalty. Lev helmets coming off easily today.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

The teams are back on the ice and the 3rd period will begin soon.

Another exciting period of hockey, this time Lev was the more dominant team, but both goalies have played very well so far, and that's why the score is only 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Shots on goal in the 2nd period (and game): Lev 13 (21), Barys 8 (20).

    Faceoffs: Lev 26/45 (Zackrisson 9/13), Barys 19/45 (Antropov 6/11).

    37:30
Barys now at full strength and they go to the abbreviated power play.

    36:48
Konstantin Pushkaryov hits Martin Sevc in the corner and knocks his helmet off, Sevc put his lid on but skated around without doing it up completely, so he's getting a minor penalty. Strangely, the referee put his arm up for the delay while Lev had the puck and blew the whistle when Barys got it, so everyone in the building thought Pushkaryov was getting the penalty for the initial hit -- I did anyway.

    36:04
Offside Lev with 1:21 left in the power play.

    35:50
Mikko Maenpaa tries a high wrister, but it gets knocked down and then iced.

Weak wrister from Novotny, who was being double-teamed, and it's easily handled by Yeremeyev.

    34:14
Shot from Upper is deflected and might've gone into the upper deck if not for the netting. Faceoff in the Lev zone.

    33:12
We've got more action in front of Yeremeyev but the play is stopped for a hand pass against Lev, faceoff outside.

Repik with a high wrister from the boards, blocker save Yeremeyev.

    32:41

    30:39
Nik Antropov is getting the only penalty from that skirmish, roughing is the call. Lev to the power play.

    27:19
    Offside Lev.

    26:53
Michal Repik fires a wrister on a Lev rush, tried to pick the near corner but Yeremeyev made a nice glove save and hangs on.

    26:39
Another scramble in front of Vehanen, he covers it again and we have some pushing and shoving after the whistle. No penalties will result.

    25:57
Litvinenko shot from the point and missed the net. Rakhmanov tried to play the carom off the end boards but Vehanen gave him no room on the near post and froze it.

    21:50
Nemec with a looping shot from the point, Yeremeyev catches it and holds on with 1:15 left in the penalty.

    21:05
They just scored a goal and now Lev is going to the power play. Konstantin Pushkaryov is called for tripping in the attacking zone.

    20:23
    Goal for Lev!
Lev gains the zone right away, Sevc had the original shot, it was blocked in front, but Novotny got it and fed JAKUB KLEPIS at the side of the net, who fired a beautiful shot off the crossbar and in to tie the score. Assists: Jiri Novotny, Martin Sevc.

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

The teams have returned to the ice and the 2nd period will start shortly.

An eventful first period of play that got more interesting as it went along. There were some good scoring chances late, and in the final minute Barys got the game's first goal when Petri Vehanen got caught behind the net. Other than that, both goaltenders were quite sharp in the opening 20 minutes, each making some nice saves.

Shots on goal in the 1st period: Lev 8, Barys 12.

    1st period finished.

    19:23
    Goal for Barys!
This was the second time Petri Vehanen got caught behind the net and this time it cost him. Barys captain Dmitri Upper beat him to the puck and fed TALGAT ZHAILAUNOV, who simply put it into the empty net. Assist: Dmitri Upper.

    17:05
Then the puck is cleared and Brandon Bochenski goes in alone on a breakaway. He tried to make a move on Petri Vehanen but then shot just wide.

    16:45
Best Lev chance so far, Lukas cingel had the puck in the slot and tried to force Yeremeyev to commit but the goalie stayed with him despite being bothered by Pacovsky and stoned him.

Dangerous chance for Barys as Vehanen tried to play the puck behind the net and centred it out front, but nobody home with the net vacant.

    10:48
Nathan Oystrick with a couple of shots from the point for Lev in the first half of the power play, now both units change up.

    05:46

    00:01
    Game started.

After a moment of silence for the victims of the recent Kazan air disaster, we had the national anthems of Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic. They are now complete and the game will start soon.

Lev Praha is wearing their home red uniforms with blue and white trim, red NY Rangers-style pants and blue helmets. Barys Astana is wearing road white uniforms with two-tone blue and gold trim.

    Starting Lineups:

Lev Praha: Vehanen (Lukáš) – Ševc, Mäenpäa, Oystrick, Němec, Jaakola, O'Byrne, Humphries, Nakládal – Azevedo, Novotný, Klepiš – Sekáč, Zackrisson, Thörnberg – Birner, Vrána, Řepík – Ridderwall, Cingel, Pacovský.

Barys Astana: Yeremeyev (Poluetkov) – Litvinenko, Savchenko, Blokhin, Semyonov, Barker, Lundin, Grebenschikov – Rudenko, Antropov, Starchenko – Zhailaunov, Upper, Pushkaryov – Dawes, Boyd, Bochenski – Rakhmanov, Polishchuk, Gavrilin.

Referees: Gashilov, Shchenyov – Gordenko, Tomilov.

Lev Praha won five games in a row twice last season -- once in the first month and once in the last, which helped them vault into a Western Conference playoff position. On Tuesday, the will be looking to do it for a third time. However, the first four teams they´ve beaten on the streak are all outside of the playoff picture or on the bubble. Barys Astana is another story, however. The Kazakh side has 56 points in 26 games and is 2nd in the Eastern Conference, just a point behind leader Ak Bars Kazan. They´re coming off a 6-2 spanking of Slovan in Bratislava on Sunday.

Ari Ahonen and Vitali Yeremayev have platooned in goal and both done well, putting up comparable numbers. It will be Yerejeyev starting on Tuesday -- he had a fantastic outing here in Prague last year.

The leading scorer so far is ex-NHLer Brandon Bochenski, now in his fourth year with Barys, who has 23 points in 26 games. The international roster has contributions from many different countries, with other top forwards being Talgat Zailauov, Nigel Dawes, Dustin Boyd, Roman Starchenko, Nikolai Antropov and Dmitri Upper. On defence, the top scorer is another former NHLer and a University of Maine grad, Mike Lundin with 11 points. Roman Shavchenko is also dangerous from the point with 4 power-play goals. Another ex-NHLer in the lineup is Cam Barker, a recent acquisition who will be playing just his fourth game and is still looking for his first KHL point.

To make matters more difficult for Lev, they´ve never beaten Barys, who won both of last year´s meetings. In fact, in their first meeting in Prague on September 22, Barys ended Lev´s first five-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory, despite a 44-26 shots advantage for Lev. On January 10, Barys´ 5-1 victory on home ice was the middle game of a five-game losing streak for Lev.

In the first three games of this home stand, the Lions have won once in overtime, once late in regulation time, and once in a shootout, so they´ve had a flare for the dramatic lately. The heroes the past three games have been Martn Ševc, Nathan Oystrick and Jakub Klepiš, so it remains to be seen who will step up into the role on Tuesday. After a game off on Sunday, Petri Vehanen returns to the Lev net. Otherwise, the lineup will be exactly the same, right down to the starting line combinations.

    Welcome. Game starts at 19:00.

    Derek OBrien
