CSKA enter the matchup being 4th seeded in the Western standings, right after SKA, Dynamo Moscow and Dinamo Riga. With the record 16-6-13 and 59 points, they're only 3 points away from the 3rd spot, but also 16 points away from their opponents.

CSKA find themselves in a bit of a struggle in the last two games, that they lost to Lokomotiv and Atlant, but now they will play five in a row at home that should help them a bit in the standings, especially with Dinamo showin a slight fall in the play.

SKA come into the game on the road with an impressive six-game winning streak, both on home ice and on the road. Their last two wins came in the shootout against Lev and Slovan on the road, and they look unstoppable in terms of regulation losses.

SKA is currently positioned 1st overall and if they can continue their tempo they're bound to enter the playoffs being the 1st seed. Their impressive record 21-7-6 and 75 points stands up to their reputation of being one of the best Russian teams. And beyond the borders...

And SKA are off with an aggressive start as Evgeny Skachkov immediately puts Proskuryakov to a test with a shot from the left circle, but he manages to cover it.

SKA still in the zone but lose possession and then play high forecheck on CSKA in their zone.

CSKA dump the puck from the left and go for a line change, so SKA will restart.

Kucheryavenko bursts out and gets a fine pass into the zone on the right, faces the goalie by himself but then is whistled offside and SKA miss the opportunity.

A great battle is fought on the ice, as they play aggressive hockey with a lot of contact.

SKA more concrete down the ice, while CSKA can't get anything organized in the zone.

Finally a shot from CSKA from the right of the blueline, Salak makes a pad deflection with ease.

SKA keep the puck within the zone and try to build on the attack as if they had the powerplay, circling around.

Alexander Radulov receives the puck in the neutral zone, drives with it into the zone over the left and tries to feed for the slot, but no one is there and the pass gets deflected into the air.

Yakov Rylov mispasses in his own zone giving SKA another chance to go on the offense, though they can't keep possession behind Proskuryakov's net.

A lot of hits and blocked shots so far in the game, we don't have many clean shots aimed directly at the netminders.

CSKA get wings after getting first on the boards and continue attacking hard.

A great pass to the blueline for SKA, on the right Ilya Kovalchuk receives the feed and fires one up immediately, but Proskuryakov gets to deflect the shot.

With almost a minute past, SKA haven't had a shot, as CSKA play a great penalty kill.

CSKA back to full strength.

Immediately Radulov had a chance in the zone, drives to the left and wants to shoot but the defenseman in front blocks him and forces to circle the net, and on the way he lost possession.

Delayed penalty on SKA, CSKA play great and had two scoring opportunities but can't get a good grip on the puck to put it behind Salak.

So far very little on the powerplay, SKA consolidated in their zone and kill the time effectively.

SKA is back at full strength, CSKA a bit disappointing on their first powerplay.

Now they fire twice in matters of seconds, but both shots from the blue are a bit wide of the net.

Icing CSKA as they want to go on the attack, but the pass is inaccurate and no one could catch it.

Dmitry Kalinin tries firing from outside the zone, but hits the player in front and CSKA get possession within their zone and can set up an offense.

Proskuryakov makes another glove save on a shot from the left side, with a very difficult angle, so the faceoff will come deep into CSKA zone.

Right off the faceoff Cervenka passes to Kalinin on the blueline, but his one-timer is caught by Proskuryakov who has to stretch for it.

SKA win the opening faceoff to the second period and still have about a minute of the powerplay.

Viktor Tikhonov fires from the right off the faceoff, Proskuryakov is there to make the glove save.

Another save by Proskuryakov after SKA took a shot hard from the left at the blueline, the goalie is focused.

Ivan Nepryayev goes to the zone on the left, but CSKA are stopped with offside and the faceoff will come in the neutral zone.

We'll have a brief stoppage as something flew onto the ice and there are technicians picking it up.

Kovalchuk shows his skills as he goes alone with three defenseman, dekes one out and then finds miraculously a team mate on the left, but the shot in the ent went throught the scramble and found Proskuryakov's glove.

Prokhorkin was left lying on the ice after smashing himself into the boards on the previous play, but got up and went to the bench, so we hope everything will be okay.

Another good start to the penalty killing period by CSKA as they clear the danger. They play great penalty kill today.

Kuteikin receives the pass on the right outside the circle and fires one-timed with a slapshot, Proskuryakov deflects the shot.

SKA put a lot of pressure on CSKA in the zone, taking some shots and keeping Proskuryakov busy. Cervenka in the end wants to send a feed from the right post, but the netminder dives and covers the puck.

SKA is held away from the net, at safe distance.

CSKA is back at full strength.

Ponikarovsky circles the net, gets the pass back to Dallman who forwards on to the right side but in the end the shot is deflected to the right post and SKA can't get it into the net.

Nepryayev gets a shooting opportunity exiting the behind-the-net space on the left, though Salak is there and ready.

A few chances on both sides, but goalies are exceptional and focused, deflecting shots from all spots.

Semenov wanted to try a shot off the blue, an easy pad save for Proskuryakov.

SKA can't enter the zone as they get held at the blue and CSKA clear away.

Salak makes another save as CSKA fire from the right just as they enter the zone, though the danger is not over as it deflected to a team mate on the left boards.

CSKA again start the penalty kill good, they try to keep SKA away from their zone and put high forecheck with one player down the ice.

Ilya Kovalchuk enters the zone on the right and stops at the blue, then fires a diagonal pass to the left post for the onskating team mate, but he's a bit too slow and can't get it.

CSKA clear the danger away, after Kuteikin's shot from the left on the blue went wide of the net.

CSKA is back to playing at full strength.

SKA continue in the same manner and go on attacking, though CSKA have better opportunities to defend and block most of the shots.

CSKA keep the puck within the zone and circle around looking for a gap to fire through, but no luck for them as SKA get to clear the danger in the end.

Radulov is inaccurate passing the ball into the zone and the icing is called against CSKA.

SKA is back at full strength.

SKA keep the puck into the zone in the waning moments before it'd slip away over the blue, and the shot following gets deflected aside by Proskuryakov.

Fyodorov takes the puck into SKA zone over the middle, but then stretches to the left and circles the net, leaving the puck at the right circle for Nikita Zaitsev, but he couldn't shoot with the man on his back, while in the end the net was dislocated.

One minute to go in the second period.

The third period is off, SKA go on the first attack, but Roman Cervenka can't get to shoot at Proskuryakov.

CSKA keep the puck withing SKA zone and build on the attack, with Frolov firing in the end slightly to the right outside the circles area. The puck gets blocked by Chudinov in front.

Proskuryakov dives for the puck on a shot from range and covers for a stoppage.

CSKA shows great offensive skills as they go on the attack on the right side and with a pass to the left find the onskating team mate alone, but he can't get a good grip on it and score.

Icing called against SKA.

Right off the faceoff CSKA try with a shot, it's to the left over the bar.

Alexander Frolov takes the puck into the zone on the left, and decides to shoot at Salak who makes a chest save and holds on to the puck.

SKA in the zone and keep possession, but can't find a spot to shoot.

Grigorenko leaves the puck at the right circle for Radulov who onskates and takes a hard shot, but it goes way over the bar and into the netting.

CSKA still in the zone as Radulov and Prokhorkin show they work great together exchanging a few passes, though miss to shoot in the end.

Frolov gets the pass back on the blueline in the middle, takes a hard one-timed slapper, but somewhere on the way the puck touched someone and went behind the net to the glass.

Salak gets saved with help from his defense, as he though he had covered the puck while it was alive in the crease and they cleared the danger away.

SKA is back to playing at full strength.

CSKA clear the puck and at SKA's blueline someone touches it, so no icing, but then SKA get possession.

Though they just dump it in and go for a line change. The game calmed a bit.

Proskuryakov gets the puck safely in his hands after Ilya Kovalchuk fired from outside the left circle.

CSKA clear the danger away, not for long though.

And another clearance, CSKA continue to play exceptional penalty kill.

After exchanging a lot of passes over the left and right side connecting them with passes at the blue, Kevin Dallman fires one up from the blue in the middle, Ilya Proskuryakov again in place.

SKA back in the zone after CSKA cleared the danger once again.

CSKA get back to full strength and we're back to five-aside hockey.

SKA still in the zone, and try a few combinations from the blueline diagonally, but can't get anything going.

Ilya Kovalchuk drives the puck into the zone over the middle and then stretches to the right deking out two defensemen on the way, but the shot from the right circle gets caught safe inside Proskuryakov's glove.

Nothing of significance lately, as CSKA try to kill the game and spend some more time, while SKA should go on the attack, which is difficult through such tough defense.

SKA get into the zone, but can't get possession and keep the puck.

Kovalchuk with possession on the distance, gets the pass to Tikhonov who enters the zone on the right, but again can't get the hold of the puck withing the zone.
