The US seemed like the better team at the start, but Canada got better as it went on and was dominant early in the third. The US came with a big push late, got a goal and pressed hard for the equaliser but couldn't get it.
Shots on goal in the 3rd period (and game): USA 7 (24), Canada 7 (26).
Canada finishes 1st in the group, USA 2nd. Their quarterfinal opponents are still to be decided by the Switzerland-Finland game, which is in the 3rd period and you can follow it now on Eurolivescores.
Fans standing.
If they tie this game, they win the group, regardless of what might happen in OT.
Gillies stays on the bench, 6-on-5 for the faceoff to Furcale's right.
US 3-on-2, the pass across to STEFAN MATTEAU, his shot went off a stick, hit Fucale's glove and fell into the net. Assists: Hudson Fasching,
I think every Canadian on the ice touched that puck as it was passed around, finishing with Drouin finding CURTIS LAZAR in front, who one-touched it in. Power-play goal. Assists: Jonathan Drouin, Derrick Pouliot.
It was second after the penalty had ended, but Canada continued the pressure down low. Bo Horvat put it out front and CONNOR McDAVID took two or three whacks at it and forced it past Gillies. Assists: Bo Horvat, Josh Morrissey.
The teams trade goals that period, the US shorthanded (though realistically 4-on-4) and Canada on a delayed penalty, after that, it was all Canada until the very end, when the US started a power play which will continue into the 3rd period.
1-1 after 2 periods . . . one more period to decide 1st place in Group A. If it goes more than a period, 1st goes to the US, regardless of the outcome. Stay tuned . . .
3rd period begins at 19:11 CET, 13:11 EST.
Mantha was hauled down in front of the net and there was a delayed penalty coming, but as he went down he shoveled the puck over to NIC PETAN, and he fired it into the open side ahead of a diving Jon Gillies. Assist: Anthony Mantha.
From behind the net, RILEY BARBER on the wraparound beats Fucale. Although it was the very second the penalty expires, this is technically a shorthanded goal. Assists: Jaccob Slavin, Nicolas Kediles.
That was a physical period of hockey, especially at the start and the end. The Americans had a clear edge in play the first 9 minutes or so, but after that was pretty even. You can tell that neither team wants to make a costly mistake -- it's been pretty conservative.
2nd period begins at 18:25 CET, 12:25 EST.
