Stifling defence by the Russians in the third period, and they're on their way to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Sweden-Slovakia.
For the USA, nobody would have expected this team to be out in the quarterfinals after watching their first three games, but that's the way it goes.
Grzelcyk turns with the puck with the blueline and falls, giving PAVEL BUCHNEVICH a clearcut break on the empty net and he punches the Russians' ticket into the quarterfinals. Unassisted, empty-net goal.
With the faceoff at centre, Gillies will probably be on the ice at first, but will be looking to the bench if the play moves down in the Russian zone.
The Americans were 11/19 in the first 3 games of this tournament on the power play but have been 0-for-ever since. It's time for them to get it back as they might not have many chances left this game.
The USA had that period going the way they wanted before they ran into a slew of penalties, and the cost was huge. Three penalties, two 5-on-3s, two goals Zadorov from Slepyshev and it's Russia with the 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.
3rd period begins at 13:49 CET, 07:49 EST.
Another Russian goal on a blast from the point on a 5-on-3. Again, it's Slepyshev to NIKITA ZADOROV for the one-time slapper. Assist: Anton Slepyshev. And they're still on the power play.
That didn't take long, as Slepyshev and NIKITA ZADOROV play pitch and catch at the point, leading to Zadorov's one-time bullet that finds its way through the maze and inside the post. Power-play goal and the Russian power play continues. Assist: Anton Slepyshev.
That period probably played too loosey-goosey for the liking of these two coaches. The USA escapes the period with a 3-2 lead that saw a lot of shots from these two dangerous teams.
2nd period begins at 12:58 CET, 06:58 EST.
The Americans come right back the other way and score. Barber's pass is tipped and NICOLAS KERDILES knocks it out of the air with his stick, then fires a wrister past Vasilevsky. Assist: Riley Barber.
Matteau's centring pass is tipped, but RYAN HARTMAN picks it up in the slot and fires a backhander that beast Vasilevsky to the stick side. Assist: Stefan Matteau.
The Russians answer right back. Mironov shot from the point, Gillies stopped the initial shot but it was lying there in the crease. PAVEL BUCHNEVICH shot it off the post, then whacked again to knock it in. Assist: Andrei Mironov.
Jack Eichel circled the net out front and STEFAN MATTEAU shot, the puck hit Vasilevsky and sat on the goal line. Carrick then whacked it in. Assists: Jack Eichel, Brady Skjei.
The play started with a pass out of the corner from Osnovin to MIKHAIL GRIGORENKO. Slepyshev got the rebound and gave it back to Grigorenko at the side of the net, and he put it in to open the scoring. Assist: Anton Slepyshev.
As the higher seed, the USA is the designated home team and is wearing all navy blue uniforms with red and white trim, white helmets. Russia, the designated visiting team, is wearing white uniforms with blue and red trim, red pants and helmets.

The United States finished 2nd place in Group A with 3 wins and 1 loss, Russia finished 3rd in Group B with 2 wins and 2 losses. Both teams lost on New Year's Eve with a chance to finish atop their groups. The Russians enter the game on a two-game losing streak.
No surprises in the starting goalies -- Jon Gillies for the USA and Andrei Vasilevsky for Russia.
