At almost the opposite end of the season, the same two teams meet in the final home game of the season for Vityaz. Lev have already clinched a playoff spot and Vityaz have already been mathematically eliminated, but there´s still plenty at stake for the visitors.
"Absolutely not," said defenceman Martin Ševc, when asked if it would be difficult to find motivation for Tuesday´s game. "On this trip, we haven´t picked up enough points yet, so of course we want to win. We want to finish in the top four in the conference and SKA and Dynamo are already solidly in there, so we need every point we can get."
Indeed, they head into action on Tuesday tied for 3rd place in the Western Conference with Donbass Donetsk. Each team has 88 points, while Dinamo Riga, Medveščak Zagreb and CSKA Moscow have 85, 84 and 83 points, respectively. There´s little margin for error.
As for Vityaz, a team with no pressure on them is always an opponent to be wary of. Their main offensive sparkplug is Maxim Afinogenov, who leads the team with 11 goals and 26 points. A familiar face to Lev fans will be defenceman Mathias Porseland, who has played 13 games with Vityaz since being acquired from Admiral Vladivostok. In goal, Ivan Lasutin has done an admirable job, considering the changes that have gone on around him.
