Shots on goal: USA 10 (43) – Finland 8 (15)
Very early in their power play the Fins are able to score their first goal during this Olympic tournament! After a long cross-pass by Nina Tikkinen it is SUSANNA TAPANI who appears alone in front of the net and beats Vetter with a well-placed shot from a sharp angle to make it 3-1!!!
Assisted by Michelle Karvinen.
Shots on goal: USA 18 (33) – Finland 4 (7)
The Americans finally use their pressure to score the 3-0 – the first goal today in power play! A shot from within the slot by Anne Shleper missed the net and then the puck was deflected from the boards and came to ALEX CARPENTER whose beautiful back hander from just right to the net hit the left goal post and went in from there!
Assisted by Anne Schleper.
The American women win a face off inside the Finnish third, a shot hits the boards behind the net and then the rebound hits the chest of KELLI STACK who battles the puck in out of the air just like a baseball player from short distance! A strange goal but deserved!
Assisted by Hilary Knight and Amanda Bozek.
With the time progressing the Fins became stronger and stronger and had several good opportunities themselves. Only at the end of the first period the American women gained back a bit more controll again.
Shots on goal: USA 15 – Finland 3
The American team gets the lead after only 53 seconds! What a start in Sochi! Finnish defender Emma Terho lost the puck with a misdirected pass at the own blue line and then HILARY KNIGHT usd the following break away to beat goalie Noora Räty from short distance! Ice cold!
Without assist!

Both countries are known for their quality of their women's hockey programs. While the Americans were able to win the gold medal during the very first version of women's hockey at Winter Olympics in 1998 in Nagano – followed by silver, bronze and again silver medals – and during 4 World Championships, the Fins collected no less than 10 bronze medals at World Championships and two bronze medals at Olympics.
During the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver both teams were in the same group and the American women beat the Fins by a clear result of 6-0. While Finland went on to win the bronze medal game against neighbouring Sweden (3-2 OT), the Americans lost the gold medal final against Canada (0-2). During the 2013 IIHF World Championship Finland and USA again were in the same group and this time the result was closer but still the Americans won (4-2) before both teams met again in the semifinals were Team USA beat Finland again (3-0). The American women went on to win the gold medal game against Canada (3-2) while Finland lost the bronze medal game against Russia (0-2).
If Finland can get a big surprise in this crucial match in group A, we'll see very soon! The other two teams of the group – Canada and Switzerland – will play at 14.00 CET which we will also cover of course!
