This series is now tied 1-1, and the teams will play games 3, 4, 5, and if necessary 6 all in Bratislava. (00:10:47)
Like so many goals to end these games, this was just a scramble around the goal, and it was YEVGENI BELUKHIN that managed to slide that one through the pile of bodies and across the line.
Assist: Maxim Yakutsenya.
Quality scoring chances: Lev 4 (18), Donbass 2 (14).
4th overtime period begins at 23:59 CET (!) 18:59 EDT.
Way back in the third period, the attendance of this game was announced at 5686, and most of them are actually still here. I'd say around 4500.
Shots on goal in the 2nd overtime (and game): Lev 7 (43), Donbass 10 (46).
Quality scoring chances: Lev 2 (14), Donbass 3 (12).
3rd overtime period begins at 23:10 CET, 18:10 EDT.
They're obviously bagged at this point and, with two straight icings, haven't been able to change players.
Lev hit a post on the opening shift and had all sorts of pressure in the early going of that period, even earning a power play, but Donbass came back with a bit of a push later. Overall, Lev had the more dangerous scoring chances, but that doesn't mean anything right now.
Shots on goal in the 1st overtime period (and game): Lev 5 (36), Donbass 6 (36).
Quality scoring chances: Lev 5 (12), Donbass 2 (9).
2nd overtime period begins at 22:21 CET, 17:21 EDT.
Shots on goal in the 3rd period (and game): Lev 8 (31), Donbass 5 (30).
Quality scoring chances: Lev 1 (7), Donbass 3 (7).
Sudden-death overtime begins at 21:31 CET, 16:31 EDT.
Lev fans on their feet now. They want a goal before overtime.
They'd been coming close and it finally went in. Dadonov turned with the puck at the right wing boards and shot toward the crowd in front. It was tipped by MAXIM YAKUSTENYA and went up and in. Tied game.
Assist: Yevgeni Dadonov, Yevgeni Belukhin.
Shots on goal in the 2nd period: Lev 14 (23), Donbass 14 (25).
Quality scoring chances: Lev 4 (6), Donbass 1 (4).
3rd period begins at 20:44 CET, 15:44 EDT.
They come right back and re-take the lead 21 seconds later! The puck was dumped into the corner but took a strange bounce right in front to JAKUB MATAI, who tucked it inside the near post before Leighton could react.
They finally cash in on the power play. A cross-point pass comes to YEVGENI BELUKHIN, who moves into a better shooting position and fires a rocket over the glove hand side of Petri Vehanen, who appeared screened.
Assist: Oskars Bartulis.
Still 1:54 remains in Ruslan Fedotenko's major penalty, being served by Viktor Zakharov. They've already scored twice on this power play.
Shots on goal in the 1st period: Lev 9, Donbass 11.
Quality scoring chances: Lev 2, Donbass 3.
2nd period begins at 19:54 CET, 14:54 EDT.
This time it was Maenpaa who shot from the point, and PETR VRANA was once again Johnny on the spot, this time going to his backhand and putting in the rebound for his second goal of the same power play, and it continues . . .
Assist: Mikko Maenpaa.
Nathan Oystrick with the shot from the point, pad save Leighton but the rebound went right to PETR VRANA, who put it in the open side. Power-play goal, and Lev remain on the power play for another 3:57.
Assists: Nathan Oystrick, Mikko Maenpaa.
Fedotenko is getting a major penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind.
There's :07 left in the Lev penalty, then they'll be going to the power play for an extended period of time.
From behind the net, YEVGENY DADONOV wrapped the puck around, Vehanen stopped the first attempt with his skate, but he took another whack at it and forced it up and over the pad and across the goal line.
Assists: Ruslan Fedotenko, Maxim Yakutsenya.
Lev Praha is wearing their home red uniforms with blue and white trim, red NY Rangers-style pants and blue helmets. Donbass Donetsk is wearing their road white unforms with red, black and silver trim, black pants and white helmets.
Lev Praha: Vehanen (Engren) – Mäenpää, Ševc, Oystrick, Němec, Gragnani, O'Byrne, Nakládal – Klepiš, Novotný, Azevedo – Sekáč, Vrána, Thörnberg – Birner, Zackrisson, Řepík – Kubalík, Cingel, Matai – Pacovský.
HC Donbass Donetsk: Leighton (Laco) – Koněv, Kolář, Wilson, Podhradský, Bartulis, Razin, Silnitsky – Laine, Virtanen, Kiiskinen – Dadonov, Fedotěnko, Yakutsenya – Blagoy, Varlamov, Kašpar – Toryanik, Bělukhin, Zakharov.
Referees: Anisimov, Gofman Linesmen: Medvedev, Birin.
"I was just trying to get it on net and it went behind the goalie and I never really saw what happened to it," said Azevedo after the game.
"It was so fast that at that moment I couldn´t tell if it was a post or not," said teammate Petr Vrána, who was on the bench at the time of the shot. "We didn´t know if it was a goal, so we played on."
Donbass head coach Andrei Nazarov was a little less diplomatic when questioned about the goal after the game. "We don´t think should have counted," he simply stated.
From there, a four-goal outburst from Lev basically put the game away in the second period. Azevedo earned his second point of the game on the 2-0 goal, when his pass attempt was blocked but landed right on the stick of captain Jiří Novotný, who finished the play.
"It wasn´t a pretty goal," said Azevedo. "Novo´s goal was just a bang-bang play and he put it in the net and then Vrána´s was just a point shot and he deflected it in. They weren´t pretty goals. We just got pucks to the net and they went in."
The two goals came just 45 seconds apart, early in the middle frame, and chased Donbass starting goalie Ján Laco from the game. From there, things got physical, with three players going down with injuries and not returning.
"That´s playoff hockey," said Vrána. "The level of emotion in these games is intense, and every game is important. Some of the hits were maybe a little borderline, but that´s the referee´s job to decide, not mine."
For Lev, Calle Ridderwall and David Ullström both left the game in the second period after being hit hard into the boards. Both players are doubtful for game two.
"Ullström has an upper-body injury and is in the hospital for examination," said coach Kari Jalonen after the game, adding, "Rdderwall is lower-body, but we don´t know exactly what it is."
Donbass defenceman Oleg Piganovich also left the game after apparently hitting his head on the net, and his status for game two is also uncertain.
Most observers seem to think that there is a lot of room for improvement from both teams, and game two could be a different type of game.
"I don´t think we played a bad game, but there are a lot of areas that we could improve," said Azevedo, specifically naming the power play and how the team played with the lead in the third period. As for Donbass, he said: "They´re a good team. They´re going to be pissed off and ready to go tomorrow, so we´ve got to be ready to play."
"I don´t think (game one) showed the best of either team," said Vrána. "We scored goals, but we made a lot of mistakes. If Donetsk had played at a level which they normally play, the game would have looked completely different."
"We lost this game because we lacked speed and aggressiveness," said Nazarov. "That´s not an excuse, but a fact."
One question regarding Donbass is who their starting goalie will be. Laco was lifted in favour of Michael Leighton after the third Lev goal. Both goalies have appeared five times in the team´s first eight playoff games -- four starts and one relief appearance each. Lev will almost certainly come back with Petri Vehanen.
