"We can´t even give him a chance. Today he got two and scored on both. That decided the game," said defenceman Martin Ševc, who did all he could to contain Metallurg´s big sniper with a deadly hip-check early in the game. "Otherwise, I would say that we played the other lines well. That´s not good enough for us, though. We need to play Mozyakin and the others on that line very carefully."
Beyond the big hit, Ševc was solid all game with a great defensive play to break up a two-on-one. His blast from the point early in the third period also provided Lev´s only goal of the game -- a deflection by Justin Azevedo to extend his goal-scoring streak to six games, tying a KHL playoff record.
"It was a model playoff game," described Metallurg head coach Mike Keenan. "Excellent goaltending on both sides and excellent performances by some great players. Our captain Mozyakin scored two goals. Azevedo also scored and was in top form. It was a close game that was decided by individuals."
"It was a very even game," said Lev coach Kari Jalonen. "We had some good moments, especially towards the end of the second period. We played with a lot of heart and had several chances to score, and finally pushed through early in the third. And overtime is overtime. Metallurg had a good chance and scored on it."
Despite the loss, however, the Lions remained in high spirits on the four-hour flight home, confident that it won´t be their last.
"Nothing is over," captain Jiří Novotný said on board the plane. "Let's go back to our full arena and not hang our heads."
Another large and noisy crowd is expected at O2 Arena on Monday night, in what will definitely be Lev´s final home game of the season, win or lose. In each of the two previous games in Prague during the series, new KHL single-game attendance records were set. The fans went out of their way to support the home team and, in the opinion of the league, a little too far, resulting in a fine. Despite that, it´s hoped that in game 6 an attendance record will be set once more.
The situation is clear -- Metallurg can claim the Gagarin Cup with a win. If Lev win, the teams return back to Magnitogorsk for a seventh game on Wednesday.
Lev Praha: Vehanen (Engren) – Ševc, Mäenpää, Oystrick, Němec, Gragnani, O'Byrne, Jaakola, Nakládal – Zackrisson, Novotný, Azevedo –Sekáč, Vrána, Thörnberg – Birner, Kapanen, Řepík – Ridderwall, Cingel, Matai.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk: Koshechkin (Pekhursky) – Antipin, Biryukov, Khabarov, Tereschenko, Lee, Ibragimov, Metlyuk, Malinovsky – Mozyakin, Kovář, Zaripov – Potekhin, Kazionov, Paré – Kosov, Yunkov, Platonov – Osala, Brent, Timkin..
From the faceoff deep in their own zone, Zaripov passed up to SERGEI MOZYAKIN, who beat Maenpaa to the outside and then backhanded it through Vehanen from an angle to open the scoring.
Assists: Danis Zaripov, Jan Kovar.
That didn't take long, and it was JUSTIN AZEVEDO with the one-time blast. That temporarily gives him a KHL-record 7-game goal-scoring streak, but there was a lot of traffic in front and the puck looked like it changed direction. It might end up going to Niko Kapanen, who was stationed in front, but for now it's Azevedo tying the game on the power play.
Assists: Petr Vrana, Ondrej Nemec.
They move the puck around the outside again and this time MARTIN SEVC blasts it on net, hitting the near side before Koshechkin can get across.
Assists: Ondrej Nemec, Justin Azevedo.
Shots on goal in the 1st period: Lev 14, Metallurg 8.
Quality scoring chances: Lev 6, Metallurg 3.
2nd period begins at 19:51 CEST, 23:51 YEKT, 13:51 EDT.
They were putting on pressure in the zone, and finally Osala with a lovely backhand pass out in front to MIKHAIL YUNKOV, who one-times it in from the slot to tie this game.
Assist: Oscar Osala, Sergei Tereschenko.
A bad break for Petri Vehanen. CHRIS LEE teed up a slapper from the top of the circle, it tipped off the end of Vehanen's glove, pops up into the air and lands inside the net before anyone can rescue it. Two quick goals has sucked the energy right out of this building.
Assists: Tim Brent, Yevgeny Timkin.
The momentum swings in this game . . . Birner out from behind the net to RYAN O'BYRNE at the point, and he blasts it through everybody and this game is tied again.
Assists: Michal Birner, Michal Repik.
Lev had killed the penalty, but just after it ended Mozyakin led a rush down the right wing, and things can always happen when he has the puck. He fed the trailer, FRANCIS PARE, with a perfect pass, which he one-timed off the near-side post and in for the go-ahead goal.
Assist: Sergei Mozyakin.
Shots on goal in the 2nd period (and game): Lev 9 (23), Metallurg 13 (22).
Quality scoring chances: Lev 3 (9), Metallurg 8 (11).
3rd period begins at 20:41 CEST, 00:41 YEKT, 14:41 EDT.
Wow! They were getting nothing as Metallurg sat back defending, but finally they get a shot through after the puck came out of a scramble along the boards, MIKKO MAENPAA wristed it through a crowd and this game is tied 4-4!
After this game was played at a breakneck pace for 40 minutes, Metallurg tried to sit back and protect the lead in the third period, and that might have been a mistake. Mikko Maenpaa scored the tying goal with 2:21 left in regulation time. If Lev score the next goal, we go to game 7, if Metallurg score the KHL season is over.
Shots on goal in the 3rd period (and game): Lev 5 (28), Metallurg 8 (30).
Quality scoring chances: Lev 2 (12), Metallurg 2 (13).
Sudden-death overtime begins at 21:24 CEST, 01:24 YEKT, 15:24 EDT.
You can feel the nervous tension in this building. The Gagarin Cup is in the building too. Will it be presented tonight, or on Wednesday in Magnitogorsk?
Lev came back quickly the other way, a long shot from Zackrisson trickles through Koshechkin and he saves it from going over the line. Then Metallurg can't get it out of the zone and Zackrisson took another long shot. Koshechkin stopped it but was still off balance and NATHAN OYSTRICK got two whacks at the puck, the second one from below the goal line banked in off Koshechkin's right leg and across the goal line. We're going to game 7!
Assist: Patrik Zackrisson.
Well that's in from Prague for the season. There's one more KHL game in the 2013-14 season and it will be in Magnitogorsk on Wednesday, 19:00 YEKT, 15:00 CEST, 09:00 EDT.
These two teams have gone back and forth in this series, and have now traded overtime wins on home ice to set up a one-game, winner-take-all for the Gagarin Cup. (22:22:28)
