While France hasn't won their opener since reappearing in the elite division in 2008, Canada lost their first game of the event last time in 1978 when Finland defeated it 6-4 in Prague.

Canada and France met the last time in Finland in 2012 when the hegemon beat its opponent 7-2. Despite a 30-save effort by netminder Fabrice Lhenry, Jamie Benn scored the game-winning goal just thirteen minutes into the first period.

Last year, Canada almost lost to Slovenia in the preliminary round, but avoided the upset and took the game in overtime. The last time Team Canada actually lost while being a huge favorite was in 2000 when Norway beat them 4-3 in St. Petersburg.

The odds are stacked against the French team, but they were in the same situation last year against Russia and came out victorious as Antoine Roussel scored the game-winner of a 2-1 game.

David and Goliath meet on the opening day of the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk, Belarus. The Canadians, led by captain Kevin Bieksa, will look to prove their role of the gold-medal contender against France, an underdog with an unpredictable roster that includes NHL forward Antoine Roussel.
