Lukko Rauma
Friday 22.08.2014, 20:00 • National Ice Centre • Champions League

The final whistle goes and despite a scare in the second period, Liiga bronze medalists last year, Lukko Rauma, take a big victory away in their CHL opener. Jerry Ahtola scored the winning goal early in the third period as the Nottingham Panthers rallied back from a 2-0 first period deficit through a pair of Steve Lee goals. Craig Kowalski was in top form in the Panthers net, but he couldn't do anything to deny Ahtola and Gagnon from scoring in the third period. The Panthers will look to regroup on Sunday as they host Lulea Hockey at 14:35 CET. Eurolivescores will have the call once again from the National Ice Centre. Thank you for joining (22:27:28)

    Panthers ice the puck

    48:38
    Goal for Lukko!
I think the fairytale is over for the Panthers now as Lukko convert on the powerplay. It's good passing play and eventually the puck falls to AARON GAGNON in the slot, who goes top shelf on a helpless Kowalski. Assisted by: Vahalahti, Kousa.

    45:25
    Goal for Lukko!
It's against the run of play but Lukko have retaken the lead. It's sad to see but the Finnish side capitalises from poor play by Steve Lee, who loses the puck to JERRY AHTOLA, who uses his speed to cut to the centre of the slot and beat Kowalski low. No assists. 2:3.

    44:50
Fantastic skill by Lachowicz opens up a lane. The Panthers' forward gets a shot away with traffic in front but Ryan Zapolski makes the save

    44:24
Zapolski called into action once more. The Lukko goaltender is fighting the puck at the moment.

    44:11
A fantastic pass by Lachowicz allows Higgins to plough towards the goal. He gets a shot away which Zapolski saves but Podlesak is first to the loose puck. The Czech forward doesn't get all of it though and it is saved.

    43:26
Niskala is sure he's scored as he looks to have got a perfect wrap around off, but Kowalski is there once again, sprawling and keeping his left pad tight on the post to deny the Finnish national team defenceman

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Both teams return to the ice.

Second period shots on goal (total)
    Lukko 13 (24)
    Panthers 9 (15)

Well well well. The second period draws to a close and how the story has changed in the space of twenty minutes. A brace by Great Britain international defenceman Stephen Lee, one even strength and one on the powerplay has drawn the Panthers level with the heavily-favoured Lukko Rauma. The Finnish side looked all out of sorts after a solid start, leaving us with a potential shock on the cards with one period to go at the National Ice Centre. Nottingham goaltender Craig Kowalski has been in fine form, making countless stops, his best being a glorious glove save to deny Aaron Gagnon's breakaway effort.

    40:00

Robinson tries to catch Zapolski sleeping at the near post but the American makes the save. Lukko bring the puck the away way but Kowalski gloves the puck

    34:59
It's a defensive mix-up by the Panthers and Aaron Gagnon is all in alone on a shorthanded break. Kowalski shuts with the door with a miraculous glove save though. Benedict hooked Gagnon as the latter sped away and gets called. 56 seconds of 4 on 4 before Lukko get the man advantage.

    31:21
Kowalski makes a great stop on a Mikko Kousa point shot. Mikkola is digging around for a rebound in front of Kowalski which leads to some pushing and shoving after the whistle.

    30:23
Janne Lahti is desperate for a second goal. He cuts in from the right wing and fires a hard wrist shot which Kowalski does well to glove without giving a second chance effort.

    25:17
Penalty against Lukko Rauma. Interference minor called against Jonne Virtanen

    23:58
    Panthers ice the puck.

    22:46
    Goal for Nottingham!

    22:28
Nathan Robinson looks the most dangerous player for the Panthers he gains the zone and shoots just wide

Both teams return to the ice ready to get underway for the second period.

So the first period draws to a close with Lukko Rauma holding a 2-0 lead over the Nottingham Panthers. Lukko have been largely in control of play, although the Panthers started to come into the opening frame as it progressed.

Henrik Koivisto opened the scoring on a 2 on 1 break, roofing the puck over Kowalski, before Janne Lahti broke free of his marker to backhand the puck past Craig Kowalski. The Panthers looked decent on the only powerplay chance but have been unable to really trouble Ryan Zapolski apart from when they had the man advantage.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    18:50
A lucky bounce sends Vahalahti up in front of Kowalski all alone but he somehow manages to shoot wide. Panthers ice the puck

Eight minutes in and Lukko are now two to the good. JANNE LAHTI carries the puck for what seems like an eternity before cutting to the slot and backhanding it past Kowalski. Tough start for the Panthers. Assisted by: Toni Koivisto. 0:2.

    04:45
    Goal for Lukko!
It's too easy for the Finnish side. A bad pinch at the blueline leads to a 2 on 1, and Olli Sipilainen's feed from the left wing finds HENRIK KOIVISTO who roofs the puck over a sprawling Craig Kowalski. 0:1. Assisted by: Olli Sipilainen.

    03:54
Lachowicz strays offside as Nottingham counter.

    03:40
Lukko cut through Nottingham's defence like a knife through warm butter. Gagnon should've buried that but shoot wide.

    03:00
Great battling between Jonne Virtanen and Martin Podlesak. Virtanen has puck possession but can't do anything with it.

    Game started.

Both team's top lines start. It'll be Farmer vs Piitulainen in the faceoff circle.

Less than a minute away from face-off. A decent crowd at the National Ice Centre to witness this historic game.

    As do the Nottingham Panthers.

Lukko Rauma take to the ice.

The big team news going into this game is that the Panthers are without last season's top scorer David Clarke. Otherwise they look to be at full strength. Lukko go with Zapolski in goal and have reunited last season's prolific line of Gagnon-Piitulainen-Vahalahti.

Craig Kowalski starts for Nottingham. The Cramo Top Scorer's jersies in today's game are being worn by Robert Lachowicz (NOT) and Ville Vahalahti (LUK)
We are approximately 25 minutes away from faceoff at the National Ice Centre. The teams have just completed their warmup, and the zambonis are cleaning the ice before the puck drops.

It’s a historic day in Nottingham as the Panthers are set to host one of the giants of European hockey, Rauman Lukko. The Liiga bronze medallists come to Nottingham with a long and established history, but it will be their first time playing against British opposition. The National Ice Centre will play host to one of the biggest days in British hockey in recent memory, as the Panthers will look to produce a result against their much-favoured Finnish opponents.

Lukko were defeated by Tappara in the Liiga semi-finals last season in seven games. Coincidentally, Lukko’s marquee summer signing was their conqueror’s captain, as 37 year old Ville Niemenen joined Lukko to provide a wealth of experience along with a quality scoring touch. Up front, the Lukko forward core would strike fear into the heart of any side in Europe, especially as last season’s top scorers Ville Vahalahti, Aaron Gagnon and Toni Koivisto were all retained. Furthermore, Lukko have bolstered their defence with the signings of Finnish national team regulars Janne Niskala and Mikko Kousa from Atlant Mytishchi and Jokerit respectively. Ryan Zapolski is another returnee, and the American goaltender will be looking for another solid season after posting a 0.926 save percentage in his first season in Europe.

It would be remiss to completely rule out the Panthers’ chances though, as last season’s Challenge Cup champions have bolstered their roster significantly. The Panthers have added considerably depth in all areas, whether it be the signing of former Latvian national team goaltender Martins Raitums to challenge long-time starter Craig Kowalski, or the depth signings of Evan Mosey and Sam Oakford on the blueline. Corey Neilson’s team has focused on adding players with experience from the best European leagues, and Nathan Robinson headlines a stellar group of forwards. The 32 year old Canadian has a wealth of experience from the AHL, Liiga and DEL, scoring 252 points in 331 games in the German top flight. Bryan Schmidt and Mark Lee also have DEL experience, and Martin Podlešák joins Nottingham with nearly 300 games experience in the Czech Extraliga on his resumé. Friday’s game will have some significance as the forward laced up 16 times for Lukko in 2008/09. Charles Landry was the Panthers big summer signing on defence, as the 23 year old blueliner called time on a promising AHL career to join the Panthers. Look for the Panthers British talent to have significant ice time against Lukko, as David Clarke and Robert Lachowicz especially, are key players and will be relied upon to score points. Clarke was the Panthers top scorer last season with 64 points.

Eurolivescores.com will have all the action as the puck drops at 20:00 CET (19:00 GMT), and a crowd estimated to be around 6,000 will be on hand to welcome Rauman Lukko to Great Britain and the CHL.

Welcome. This game starts at 19:00 BT, 20:00 CET, 21:00 EET.

    Jon Rowson

Nottingham Panthers: Kowalski (Raitums) – Schmidt, Landry, Mosey, Berube, S. Lee, Cohen, Oakford – Lawrence, Farmer, Robinson – Lachowicz, Langelier-Parents, Jacina – Graham, Benedict (C), Higgins – M. Lee, Podlesak, Boxill, Betteridge.
