Today's game will be played in the biggest sport arena in Poland – Tauron Arena Krakow with more than 15000 seats for hockey fans. Tauron Arena Krakow already held such big hockey events as IIHF World Championships Division 1 Group A in 2015 and final four tournaments of the Polish Cup. During the final four tournaments of the Polish Cup in 2014 the spectators record at a single ice hockey game in Poland was beaten.
This is the third season in the Champions Hockey League for Czech elite team Sparta Prague. Sparta is also one of funding clubs of CHL. Last season the team from Prague finished the competition at 1/8 finals after being defeated by Karpat Oulu.
Sparta played five games in pre-season and lost only one of them. Czech team beat Slovan Bratislava from Slovakia, ERC Inglostadt from Germany, Lausanne HC and Geneve-Servette HC from Switzerland. Only HC Fribourg-Gottéron managed to beat last season finalist of Czech extraliga.
A new 13th country joining the Champions Hockey League is Poland, represented by 2016 champions Comarch Cracovia. In march Cracovia beat GKS Tychy in the final of the Polish Hockey League in the best-of-seven series 4-3.
Cracovia played four games in pre-season. Krakow beat their local opponent Unia Oswiecim and Czech team LHK Jestrabi Prostejov and lost games with Slovak runner-up HC Banska Bystrica and HC Zubr Prerov.
