The final buzzer has sounded, and Canada have comfortably seen off the challenge of Italy 6-1! The score may be large but don't be fooled, the Canadians were given a real test today. Joel Ward, Jason Chimera, Kyle Turris, Brayden Schenn and Cody Hodgson with a double all managed to get on the scoreboard, with David Borrelli grabbing the Italian consolation effort. Thanks for following the game with us, and join me again soon today for Finland against Switzerland at the 2014 IIHF World Championships! (17:59:30)

    60:00
    Game over.

    59:47
We're now into the final few seconds with Canada in the end easing to victory

    58:47
With time now starting to run down the Canadians have five players on the ice again

    56:47
Italy do look pretty tired right now but they do have yet another powerplay, Braydon Coburn for tripping has been called

    56:30
Goal for Team Canada! Canada just tear their opponents apart on the counterattack! Stealing the puck neutral ice BRAYDEN SCHENN skates in with purpose on the right flank, slides it across the face of goal but it takes a deflection off a defender and goes into the net! It's 6-1! Assists- Jonathan Huberdeau and Sean Monahan

    55:48
Battling away at Andreas Bernard's left hand post Cody Hodgson can't find room to make clean contact

    55:22
Nicoletti! Through traffic he takes aim from the blue line, but it's right down the goalkeeper's throat who holds easily

    54:59
Canada are back at full strength with almost exactly five minutes remaining

    53:51
Just as Italy come back to full strength Matt Read could have had a sixth for Canada! Driving in from the left hand boards one on one Read looks to go five hole, but Andreas Bernard stands tall!

    52:59
The penalties continue and this time there's one against Canada, Braydon Coburn has been penalised for tripping

    51:49
Nicoletti! It's another one of those golden opportunities that Italy have seen pass them by! Open on the doorstep shorthanded Davide Nicoletti can only find James Reimer's pads!

    51:37
Trevor Johnson for holding has handed Canada another two minutes on the powerplay

    51:32
Monahan! Three on one breakaway this time for the Canadians, Sean Monahan is picked out open at the high slot but he contrives to wrist high and wide with the netminder panicking!

    51:45
Italy despite those penalties are again back to full strength

    50:31
Braydon Coburn rips a one timer from the right faceoff circle inches wide of the far post!

    49:27
Mackinnon! Nathan Mackinnon wraps his stick around the puck, dumps it into the crease but it travels all the way through and into the boards!

    48:45
That powerplay has very promptly become a Canadian five on three, Deigo Kostner for high sticking has now been called

    47:56
Daniel Sullivan for boarding against Jason Chimera has been sent to the penalty box, and he's lucky that he got away with only a two minute minor!

    47:51
Matt Read with a beautiful backhand pass dishes to Kyle Turris, but his high wrist shot glove side is pushed wide! Those two have been on the same wavelength tonight all game long!

    46:46
Nathan Mackinnon just behind the net on the right sweeps it onto the slot and after a brief moment of panic Italy hack it clear!

    45:40
Ward! Simply out muscling his defender Joel Ward bursts through one on one, cuts to the right hand post but only just can't squeeze the puck home! He has looked excellent so far today

    45:15
    Canada drift offside

    45:01
The pretty large crowd inside the Chizhovka Arena are noisily supporting the Italians! Everyone always loves an underdog

    43:41
With Nathan Di Casmirro waiting for any scraps on the slot James Reimer spinning out of his net freezes

    43:35
The Canadians commit icing just after they almost created something on the Italian crease

    42:10
Canada don't want to get too relaxed and as they pin their opponents in their own zone Andreas Bernard makes his first save crouched down stick side

    41:12
Goal for Team Italy! Finally they've scored, it's been a long time coming! Trevor Johnson winds up from the point and his powerful slapper is expertly deflected in by DAVID BORRELLI! It's 5-1! Assists- Trevor Johnson and Giulio Scandella

    40:01
The third period is underway and we can inform you that the hapless Daniel Bellisimo in the Italian net has been pulled in favour of Andreas Bernard

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Statistics after the opening 40 minutes of play-

    Shots on target- 22-19
Saves made by the goalkeeper- 19-17
    Penalty minutes- 10-27

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

    39:50
Canada despite seeing very little of the puck are in an unforgiving mood as there are only a few seconds remaining in the second period

    37:38
Kostner! Oh my goodness, I think Italy could be here all night and they still won't score! A flowing move sees the puck being chucked across the face of goal but Daniel Kostner with an empty net to aim at makes a right hash of it! James Reimer can't believe his luck!

    36:58
The Italians still aren't giving in and James Reimer makes the save of the game off a fantastic one on one chance for Italy! The score really doesn't reflect how this game has gone at all!

    36:15
Goal for Team Canada! Every time they manage to stay in the Italian zone for a prolonged period of time they cause havoc! The puck comes off the netminder's pads right onto the stick of CODY HODGSON who delightfully flicks into the net on the right hand post, it's 5-0! Assists- Brayden Schenn and Nathan Mackinnon

    36:09
Gudbranson! Erik Gudbranson closes in from the high slot unchallenged, but cracks a lethal slapper over the bar and wide!

    35:32
Huderbeau! Lurking almost on the goal line Jonathan Huderbeau pokes into Daniel Bellisimo from point blank range! Maybe he should have done better there!

    33:58
Italy have let another powerplay chance slip by and their opponents are back at full strength

    33:47
Giulio Scandella looks to catch Reimer out glove side with a tricky snapshot from the right faceoff circle, but the Canadian is alert

    32:01
Trevor Johnson takes a slapshot on himself from the point with very few options open, but Reimer is right behind that

    31:58
Nathan Mackinnon for holding has now been punished as Canada are running into a bit of penalty trouble despite being four up already

    31:00
Ihnacak! This is getting ridiculous now! James Reimer is sprawling all around his crease, he hasn't a clue where the puck is and all Brian Ihnacek has to do is make clean contact! But no, he takes a complete air shot and it comes to nothing!

    29:19
Goal for Team Canada! It's a masterclass of how to take your chances from the Canadians! Taking up the puck in their own zone Canada skate away on a two on one, and with the netminder out of position KYLE TURRIS flicks it into the near post on the right of the slot! Shorthanded goal and it's 4-0! Assists- Matt Read

    29:07
For all of three seconds though. Erik Gudbranson for delaying the game is the latest to receive a two minute minor against his name

    29:04
Canada are still coming under a decent amount of pressure but they're already back to full strength

    28:06
Davide Nicoletti is teed up waiting at the blue line, he lifts his fearsome slapper over a covering defender but it drifts wide of the net! James Reimer would have had a job stopping that rocket

    27:04
Just as Brian Ihnacak passed up yet another very presentable opportunity for the Italians Braydon Coburn for tripping has gifted them a powerplay to get back into things

    26:02
Goal for Team Canada! They're ruthless today! On a killer breakaway JASON CHIMERA is fed on the left, he skates in and comfortably beats the netminder firing hard into the far corner! It's 3-0! Assists- Joel Ward and Mark Scheifele

    25:28
Canada have survived that scare though and they're back at full strength

    24:58
Borrelli! You can't say that Italy aren't creating chances today! David Borrelli steals the puck against the boards, with real purpose cuts round to the crease but as he seems to have beaten Reimer he misses the target! It looked harder to miss than score!

    24:04
Just as Italy get back to full strength Giulio Scandella finds space for himself, wrists in hard from the left faceoff circle but James Reimer is equal to it!

    23:28
As it was a 5+20 penalty against the Italians earlier despite that goal the Canadians were still on the powerplay, but not any more. Joel Ward for hooking has evened up the numbers

    21:39
Goal for Team Canada! The Canadians tease the Italians with excellent puck possession, and as it pops out to the left of the crease following a powerful attempt from distance CODY HODGSON clinically finishes into the near post! Powerplay goal and it's 2-0!

    21:22
Tyler Myers smashes the puck in on net from the point but Daniel Bellisimo comfortably pads it wide despite heavy traffic on front of him

    21:00
Canada move offside as they look to get set up in their opponents' zone

    20:01
The second period has indeed got started and remember that Canada are on the powerplay for a further 04:03

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

    Statistics after the first period-

    Shots on target- 13-8
Saves made by the goalkeeper- 8-12
    Penalty minutes- 2-27

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    19:57
Canada will indeed start the second period on the powerplay as the first stanza now draws to a close

    19:04
Alex Burrows is absolutely floored by Joachim Raomser! But the Canadian is in serious pain and as he is helped off the ice, Raomser for his dirty hit has received a 5+20 penalty!

    18:45
Mackinnon! The new young hope of Canadian hockey Nathan Mackinnon bullies his way through to the crease on the left, fires into the near post but the netminder kicks it wide

    16:38
Jason Chimera escapes his marker coming on in from the right hand boards, wrists hard looking for the near post but it's deflected wide and out of danger

    13:51
We have a goalmouth scramble on our hands! Daniel Bellisimo sitting on his backside just about stops it from sliding under him glove side!

    13:45
Canada you feel really needed that opening goal, now it's a real test of Italy's character

    13:07
Goal for Team Canada! That will settle their nerves down! Again down that left flank the Italians are all over the place, JOEL WARD sprints in and snipes past the goalkeeper into the far post from close range! It's 1-0!

    12:23
What a save from Bellisimo! The Italian defence completely forgets about Kyle Turris charging in on the slot from the left, he looks sure to score but the flying Daniel Bellisimo somehow gets something on it!

    11:39
Just as Italy get back to full strength Troy Brouwer stabs into Daniel Bellisimo's glove arriving in on the doorstep

    10:12
Rocco! The Canadians poorly cough up the puck center ice, it's a two on one for the Italians but as it pops out off James Reimer Vincent Rocco diving in scuffs it wide! You can't get much close than that!

    09:39
Canada are starting to pin the Italians in their own zone and they've earned a powerplay, for tripping Armin Hofer has been penalised

    07:38
Huberdeau! Finally the Canadians get something going as Jonathan Huberdeau cuts in from the right flank, wrists into the near post but Daniel Bellisimo fends it off with his shoulder!

    05:13
Insam! Canada just cannot take control of the puck at all, what a start from the Italians! Marco Insam found open at the right of the slot pokes only into the netminder! That was a clear chance!

    03:54
Despite reasonably heavy pressure the Canadians killed that penalty well and they're back to full strength

    02:36
Borgatello! Christian Borgatello winds up from the point with real power, but James Reimer makes a very tidy glove save! Italy look full of confidence!

    01:54
Canada haven't got anything at all as yet and Matt Read for hooking has been called into the penalty box

    01:10
Giulio Scandella scrapping around at the right hand post flashes the puck across the face of goal! That could have been dangerous!

    00:21
Italy are the first to rush to the attack, but James Reimer dives on the loose puck to freeze

    00:20
Here we go! Canada will be looking to avoid any shocks here today like against France!

    00:01
    Game started.

Both teams are now skating out on to the ice and it's time for the opening faceoff!

Canada are the reigning Olympic champions having romped to victory in Sochi back in February, but they never seem to perform that well at the World Championships. Italy on the other hand certainly isn't a typical hockey nation, but they do have the ability to surprise.

Good afternoon and welcome to this 2014 IIHF World Championship Group A match between Canada and Italy. This should on paper be a bit of a walkover, but Canada have already had one major slip up in this tournament.
