Tonight’s competitors found themselves unable to compete with the Nordic representatives in the group, namely Lulea of the SHL and Lukko Rauma of the SM-Liiga, both of whom will be heading to the next round and are generally having a very successful fall. Nottingham and Hamburg each lost all of their games against those two teams, and usually in a quite convincing manner. As such, the final games of group play for HAM and NOT against each other have been, as is commonly said in Germany, for the ‘golden pineapples’.
The Panthers are coming off a weekend of league play that saw them lose 4-2 to the Sheffield Steelers after having won 2-1 over the Coventry Blaze the night before. The loss was one the team didn’t necessarily expect after a 2-1 victory over the same team on September 20th. All in all, it was their 3rd loss in the last 4 Challenge Cup contests, which has the team heading to Hamburg with the goal of simply getting back on track. Let there be no doubt that the team, as the EIHL’s only representative in CHL play, has clear ambitions to be the UK’s champion this season. In addition, the team is dealing with a number of injuries and it remains to be seen just how well the team will react with new lines in place.
As with the game on September 23rd, the Freezers will be looking to gain their first, and with that, only victory in CHL play. This is not entirely unthinkable in light of the fact that Coach Benoit Laporte was dismissed after the loss in Nottingham, the definite ‘Tiefpunkt’ in the Freezers fall happenings. Assistant coach Serge Aubin, a former NHL and NLA player from Quebec, Canada, then assumed the reigns and has gone on to win three of four games in DEL play. The team has figured out how to score goals again, having even potted four in the one loss they’ve experienced with him at the helm. They finally seem to be running on all cylinders and
In addition, the team has been able to welcome a few players off the IR and the locker room is alive and kicking again. There was never a question of whether the organization had the player quality necessary to compete – and now they are producing what was expected of them. In DEL play, both Kevin Clark and Jerome Flaake have nine points in eight games. Together with Garrett Festerling, who has seven points, the Freezers can throw out one of the league’s most effective lines.
The Cramo Top Scorers for the two teams in CHL play are:
Nottingham Panthers: Nathan Robinson with 1-4-5 in 5 games
Hamburg Freezers: Matthew Pettinger and Adam Mitchell tied with 1-0-1(!) in 5 games
Fans of both teams will be watching the game live this evening. After a good sized group of Freezers fans made the trip to Nottingham last month, so too will a large group of fans from the UK be in attendance this evening. This type of fan interconnection has proven to be one of the beautiful aspects of CHL play as many groups have gotten to meet each other, share experiences, and make new friends.
Enjoy the last contest for these two clubs, who’ll take what they can for the future, then concentrate on league play from here on out.
