Donbass Donetsk are 9th in Western Conference with 68 points in 48 games. They still need as many points as possible to make the last-minute jump to the playoff spots. This is a problem CSKA Moscow don't have anymore. They are 2nd in the Western Conference with 93 points in 49 games. Still they have to get some points to defend this position as Tarasov Division neighbours Lokomotiv Yaroslavl are only four points behind them.

Before the national team break Donbass had a great run with three consecutive wins on the road against Metallurg Novokuznetsk (4-2), Sibir Novosibirsk (5-2) and Amur Khabarovsk (4-1), earning all 9 available points. Guests CSKA Moscow also had reason to celebrate when they beat Severstal Cherepovets (3-2 OT) and Spartak Moscow (4-2).

Donbass' topscorers are Yevgeni Dadonov (33 pts), Vaclav Nedorost (32 pts) and Clay Wilson (20 pts). CSKA were hit hard by the end of the lockout and thus the loss of Pavel Datsyuk and Mikhail Grabovsky but still they have Alexander Radulov (58 pts), Yakov Rylov (28 pts) and Igor Radulov (24 pts).
