Czech Republic

Sweden2
Saturday 27.04.2013, 14:00 • Kajot Arena, Brno, Czech Republic • Euro Hockey Tour

Classic defence that period by Sweden, as the Czech Republic did not get any real scoring chances. Even on their two power plays, they effectively kept the puck to the outside and forced shots from a distance, which were often blocked.

The 2012-13 Euro Hockey Tour has not been a success for Sweden so far, but this win puts them in first place in this part of it--the Czech Hockey Games. Later today, Finland takes on Russia, while all four teams finish up tomorrow in what will be the last tune-up games for all teams prior to the arrival of NHL reinforcements in time for the start of the World Championships. (16:12:59)

    60:00
    Game over.

    58:46
Breakaway for Hjalmarsson, he's denied by Salak but play continues in the Czech zone.

    57:21
Now Salak catches a long shoot-in and there'll be a faceoff in the Czech zone. Sweden not looking for offence at this time, now just trying to keep the puck out of their zone and doing a good job of it.

    56:50
Sweden ices the puck to kill off the rest of the penalty.

    56:00
The Czechs now with a brief power play, they have the puck in the Swedish zone but they're being kept to the outside.

    54:46
Sweden's power play is over as Johan Fransson is called for hooking, trying to stop a Czech shorthanded rush. We'll have 4-on-4 for :58, followed by a Czech power play.

    54:30
The puck is deflected out of play in the Czech zone. 1:16 left in the penalty.

    53:44
Sweden is going to the power play, as Lukas Kaspar got his stick up on Granberg down low in the Swedish zone. With them generating some pressure lately, this is a big chance for the Swedes to relieve that.

    52:50
Play stopped with some heavy traffic in the Swedish crease. Hertl was trying to generate something down low, then went back to the point to Petr Caslava. His shot was deflected out of play by a Swede, so the faceoff stays inside.

    51:35
A high wrister from the top of the slot by Petr Vrana is caught and held by Gustafsson. He's had several shots this game.

    50:48
    Offside Sweden.

    49:41
Ivan Rachunek tries to go top corner but hits Gustafsson in the shoulder and the puck goes out of play. Faceoff inside.

    48:45
A physical shift for the Czechs with Jakub Nakladal throwing his weight around. They're not generating any offence, though, as the Swedes are really locking it down right now.

    47:48
Sweden back at full strength, as they kill off that penalty without the Czechs getting any shots on goal, though they had some good possession around the perimeter for a while. A couple of shot attempts blocked.

    46:35
Offside Czech Republic on the shoot-in. 1:23 left in the power play.

    45:35
3rd period getting physical, first a hit by Rahimi in the corner that wasn't called but now Fredrik Pettersson is going to the box for highsticking. Czechs to the power play once again looking to tie.

    44:00
Big hipcheck into the boards by Elias Falth on Petr Hubacek, as the latter tried to beat him to the outside. Falth seems to be one of Sweden's more physical defencemen.

    41:19
Nicklas Danielsson with the shot, Salak stops and holds on. Sweden coming out aggressively to start this period.

    40:49
Right off the faceoff, Elias Falth hits the goalpost and the puck deflects out of play. Faceoff outside.

    40:44
Linus Klasen takes a slapper from the neutral zone that Salak considers putting back into play, then reconsiders and holds.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Teams are now returning to the ice and the 3rd period faceoff is moments away.

From a technical standpoint, that period was played much better by both teams. The Swedes seemed to continue their edge in play early on but the Czechs started to push back later on. No goals were scored in the 2nd period, as Sweden continues to lead 1-0 through 40 minutes.

3rd period begins at 15:34 CEST.

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

    39:20
Czechs on the rush, Vrana pushed to a weak angle and he attempts a shot, denied by Gustafsson.

    37:50
Albrandt drops for Hjalmarsson, who rips a wrister just over the crossbar.

    37:01
Oscar Lindberg with the shot from the boards that hits Salak in the chest and he holds on.

    36:30
Sweden back at full strength. The Czechs got 2 shots that power play, both slappers from the point.

    36:02
Shot from the point, Gustafsson the blocker save and it goes out of play. :25 left in the penalty.

    35:07
Petr Caslava winds from the point and takes a big slapper that hits Gustafsson, Sweden ices . . .

    34:27
Czech pressure continues and Elias Falth of Sweden is called for roughing trying to contain Vrana in front of his own net. Czechs to the power play looking to tie this game.

    33:51
Great effort from defenceman Marek Trocinsky, who weaves in from the point and gets a great chance to die this game, but Gustafsson makes a nice pad save.

    33:41
A couple of chancesfor Jiri Novotny that shift, first misses the far post with a wrister and then his shot from in close is stopped and covered by Gustaffson.

    33:01
    Offside Sweden.

    31:22
Another shot from Niclas Andersson, this one a high wrister from the top of the slot that Salak catches and holds.

    30:43
Slapshot from the right wing is kicked out by Salak.

    29:30
Long shot by Andersson is stopped by Salak.

    28:00
The Czechs ice the puck to kill of the remainder of the penalty.

    27:10
Tenkrat drops to Vrana, who hits the goalpost. Another great shorthanded scoring chance.

    27:00
Another shot by Kronwall does get through, Czechs start back the other way.

    26:30
Shot attempt from the point by Kronwall is blocked, the puck is iced.

    26:01
I stand corrected, Jan Kovar is getting a minor penalty and 10-minute misconduct for checking to the head, so Sweden is going to the power play. Koukal will serve the minor and Kovar will have a seat in the box for 12 minutes.

    26:01
Play is stopped in the neutral zone as Sweden's Andreas Jamtin is down. He's up now and has words for the referee as he heads off the ice. I didn't see what happened to him, but no penalty appears forthcoming.

    25:11
Shot from the boards is caught and held by Salak.

    24:40
Big hit in the Swedish zone by Tenkrat on Thornberg, who gives him a shot back. Play continues.

    23:32
Czechs applying pressure in the Swedish zone, a high shot from the point by Trocinsky is caught and held by Gustafsson.

    22:20
    Icing Czech Republic.

    21:50
Big chance for Sweden, a pretty passing play sets up Fransson for a one-timer at an empty net but the pass goes through his legs and he misfires.

    21:00
What a great individual effort from Tomas Hertl, beating two Swedes by himself, but then he's in too close and can only hit Gustafsson's pads.

    20:46
Trocinsky takes a shot from the left wing on a Czech rush, kicked out by Gustafsson

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

Teams have returned to the ice and the 2nd period will begin shortly.

A wide-open period full of odd-man rushes and a breakaway for each team. The Swedes got more chances, though, and they got the only goal late in the period. They lead 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The 2nd period will begin at approximately 14:50 CEST.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    19:27
Offside Sweden. They got a couple more shots on goal but the puck comes just outside the line and back in.

    18:19
    Goal for Team Sweden!
End to end action this period. Salak stopped the initial shot from Jamtin on the rush, but PAR ARLBRANDT swooped in and banged in the rebound. Assist: Andreas Jämtin.

    18:08
Turnover behind the Swedish goal, and Koukal quickly feeds Rachunek in front, but Gustafsson stops his one-timer and holds on.

    17:49
Offside Czech Republic. Jakub Krejčik's dump in on the play actually hit Thornberg in the face, but he seems to be ok. I guess it hit the visor.

    17:15
    Icing Sweden.

    16:20
Falth pinches off Novotny at the Swedish blueline with a stiff check into the boards.

    14:46
Swedish 3-on-2, the high shot by Thornberg hits Salak in the chest. A lot of odd-man rushes this period.

    14:15
Sweden's Nicklas Andersson collides with Alexander Salak in the crease, and then Marek Trocinsky starts roughing it up with him. Play is stopped but it doesn't look like any penalties are coming. Faceoff outside.

    12:59
A shot by Rosen is caught and held by Salak.

    12:40
    Icing Czech Republic.

    12:23
    Icing Sweden.

    11:50
Breakaway for Jan Kovar, he takes a long stretch pass near the Swedish blueline then tries to go high glove side but misses the net. Some wide open hockey early on.

    11:40
Gulas throws a big bodycheck in the attacking zone.

    11:22
San Jose draft pick Tomas Hertl takes a long shot from inside the line, Gustafsson stops and holds on.

    10:44
The Swedes brief power play is now over--they got a couple of shots. Back at full strength, Salak makes another save and freezes for a faceoff in the Czech zone.

    09:18
Tomas Lindhart is getting a penalty on the play for hooking, which takes his team off the power play. We'll play 4-on-4 for the next 1:18, barring further penalties.

    09:18
Shorthanded breakaway for Oscar Lindhardt, Salak comes up big again. 1:18 left in the penalty.

    08:17
Sweden's Andreas Jamtin is going to the box for hooking Kovar, and the Czechs get the game's first power play.

    08:15
Big chance on a Czech rush as Vonrka feeds Kovar, but he's hooked and that will draw a penalty.

    07:38
Both players return to the ice and we're back to 5-on-5 without either team generating anything of note, play is stopped as Sweden's Nicklas Danielsson crashes into the Czech goal. He's slow to get up.

    05:34
Coincidental penalties handed out. Tomas Rachunek and Petter Granberg each get 2:00 for roughing. We'll have 4-on-4 action.

    05:34
Back the other way, Gustafsson makes a save on a long shot, followed by some pushing and shoving after the whistle.

    05:25
Great chance for Sweden. Petersson feeds Andersson alone in front, but Salak stones him on the one-timer.

    04:00
Czech line of Hertl, Vrána, Tenkrát doing some aggressive forechecking down low, mostly below the goal line.

    02:50
Johan Gustafsson covers a loose puck at the side of his net for a stoppage. I don't think he's faced an official shot yet.

    01:46
On a Swedish 2-on-2 rush, Simon Hjalmarsson takes a long wrister that Alexander Salak stops and holds for the game's first stoppage.

    01:15
Nakladal and Krejcik both attempt shots from the point for the Czechs but both are blocked. Czechs still looking for their first shot.

    00:15
Sweden's Johan Franzen gets the game's first shot, a weak offering from the point that hits Salak's pad and deflects to the corner.

    00:01
    Game started.

The national anthems of Sweden and the Czech Republic are complete, and the opening faceoff is moments away.
