Sweden2
Saturday 18.05.2013, 15:00 • Ericsson Globe, Stockholm • World Championship

Shots on goal in the 3rd period (and game): Finland 11 (30), Sweden 12 (31).

That's all from the first semifinal, but there's one more today and it promises to be a beauty. Switzerland vs USA. The Swiss haven't won a medal at this tournament since 1953 and nothing higher than a bronze since 1935 (silver). The USA, meanwhile, hasn't won better than a bronze since 1960 (gold). One team will break a lengthy drought with a win.

You can follow that game, as well as both games tomorrow, here at EuroLiveScores.com. (17:20:57)

Players of the Game: FIN Teemu Laakso, SWE Loui Eriksson.

I don't know how you pass up Henrik Sedin for that, but one hell of a game for Eriksson as well, with 3 points as well.

That game was a battle in the trenches for sure, and the difference, as I said before, was the Sedin twins, particularly on the power play they were dynamite with Loui Eriksson.

Finland goes to the bronze medal game tomorrow, while Sweden will play in the championship game at home later.

    60:00
    Game over.

    59:37
    Goal for Team Sweden!
HENRIK SEDIN hits the empty net from the neutral zone. What a game for the Vancouver Canucks captain--MVP of this game for sure. Assist: Loui Eriksson, Henrik Tallinder.

    59:20
Finland has to retreat back and start another rush . . .

    58:50
    Offside Finland.

    58:10
Raanta goes to the bench for a 6th attacker.

    58:05
Hietanen with the shot from the point, pad save Enroth, and the rebound bounced over the stick of Pesonen, who would have had an open side of the net!

    57:56
    Timeout Finland.

    57:56
Now another offside for Finland, who are getting into a desperate situation.

    57:37
Long stretch pass to Salminen, he hits the side of the net with a long shot.

    56:44
    Offside Finland.

    56:16
Korpikoski's shot is deflected out of play. Finland's 2nd line has been their most effective so far this game.

    55:52
Back the other way, Landeskog from a distance, pad save Raanta, back the other way again . . .

    55:15
Now Granlund another shot, pad save Enroth, play continues in the Swedish zone . . .

    54:55
Antti Philstrom with the shot on a Finnish rush, deflected to the corner.

    54:04
Swedes now effectively working the puck around in the Finland zone, finally shoot and Raanta stops it for a whistle, but they took some valuable time off the clock.

    52:50
Finland trying to get something going in the Swedish zone, but being kept to the perimeter.

    51:20
Sweden just about put this game away, as Henrik Sedin undressed a Finnish defenceman cutting out front and found Dick Axelsson coming in, but Antti Raanta robbed him with the glove. That's a save he absolutely had to make at this juncture.

    50:25
Granlund gets a shot for Finland, save Enroth and play continues.

    50:00
Sweden doing a good job of killing time in the neutral zone now.

    47:52
Finland with a 2-on-1. Lauri Korpikoski, a left shooter coming down the right side, elects to shoot and misses high to the near side.

    47:38
The decision is no goal. Faceoff in the Finnish zone.

    47:38
Sweden's top line applying pressure now, Eriksson spins and shoots, sneaks in behind Raanta but not across the line. They're checking upstairs but this wasn't in.

    47:26
Johan Fransson with a wrister from the point for Sweden, glove save Raanta.

    47:07
    Offside Sweden.

    46:36
Off the draw, Heitanen to Lepisto at the point, another save Enroth.

    46:32
Shot attempt by Anttila is deflected out of play. Faceoff in the Swedish zone.

    45:00
Philstrom with the slapper from the point, save Enroth. The puck then cleared and brought back in. Offside Finland.

    44:17
Off the draw. Heitanen with the shot from the point, caught and held by Enroth for another faceoff.

    44:12
Puck deflected out of play in the Swedish zone. Faceoff inside.

    43:30
...Aaltonen to Pesonen for the big one-time slapper that hits Enroth in the chest. Finland's top line has been kept in check today by the Swedes.

    43:20
Henrik Sedin from behind the net to Eriksson, he's (wisely) tied up and the Finns start the other way . . .

    42:58
Swedes now with possession in the Finnish zone, Tallinder the shot from the point, gloved and held by Raanta.

    41:39
I said the Finns need a push, and there was their best scoring chance since the 1st period. Korpikoski with the shot from the point that was deflected in front and slid just wide of the net. Then Granlund tried to stuff it in but Enroth covers it.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Teams on the ice and the 3rd period will start shortly. The Finns are going to need a push and/or get a break.

This has been a game of momentum shifts with both teams having periods of dominance. Quality chances and goals are hard to come by, though, with these two good hockey teams with plenty of experience in both lineups. Not many mistakes to take advantage of. The difference has been the Swedish power play--the Sedins with Eriksson have played on a level above the rest of the game.

Shots on goal in the 2nd period (and game): Finland 7 (19), Sweden 8 (19).

3rd period begins at 16:39 CEST, 10:39 EDT.

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

    39:44
Offside Finland on the dump-in. Faceoff at centre ice.

    39:02
Korpisalo shoots from the boards, Enroth juggles the puck but he gets a quick whistle while the puck is bouncing in front and Finns lurking. Fortunate break for Sweden.

    38:42
    Offside Sweden.

    37:35
With Raanta down and heavy traffic in front, Mikael Granberg gets a chance to score another Swedish goal but hits the crowd of players in front.

    36:13
    Goal for Team Sweden!
The Finns know what's coming but they still can't stop it. Henrik Sedin sets up shop behind the net like Gretzky, and with the Finnish PKers frozen he passes to LOUI ERIKSSON in front, who snaps it into the top left corner to make it 2-0. Assists: Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin.

    35:06
After a lengthy delay, Finland's Juhamatti Aaltonen is going off for holding. In a game of momentum swings, it seems to be back in Sweden's favour now, and another power play goal here would really put them in the driver's seat.

    33:40
Stockholm crowd getting energized watching the Sedins cycle. They don't get to see it in person too often.

    32:33
Henrik Tallinder with a wrister on a Swedish rush, glove save Raanta, who holds on.

Shots are 6-3 Finland this period.

    31:49
The puck goes out of play in through an open door as Finland changes on the fly. The faceoff will be just outside the Swedish blueline.

    31:38
Icing Finland. I think that's the first icing call of the game.

    30:29
Finland comes back gain. Jalasvaara again takes a quick shot from the point that goes out of play off Enroth's stick.

    29:52
Nicklas Danielsson almost makes something of an innocent-looking Swedish rush when he pulls a Savardian Spinarama move and fires a backhander that gets deflected out of play. Faceoff in the Finnish zone.

    29:26
Wrister from the top of the slot by Korpikoski, blocker save Enroth.

    29:07
Puck slides to Enroth and he covers it. We've got some more pushing and shoving after the whistle, but I don't think there will be any penalties from it.

    28:05
One-time slapper by Lepisto whistles just wide.

    27:28
Finns putting on the pressure. Rising slapper from the point by Jalasvaara that Enroth gloves and holds.

    27:03
Enroth with a glove save through traffic to stop play. Just before there was a huge hit along the boards by Joel Lundqvist.

    25:41
Pesonen's shot attempt on a rush is deflected out of play by a Swedish stick, faceoff in the Swedish zone.

    24:36
Hjalmarsson with a slapper from just inside the blueline, pad save Raanta and play continues.

    23:38
Sakari Salminen beats a Swedish defenceman wide, then gets a shot from a sharp angle that Enroth stops and holds. That's Finland's first shot of the period.

    22:18
Finland ices it to kill the rest of the penalty.

    21:43
Slapshot from the point by Nicklas Danielsson, gloved and held by Raanta with :35 left in the penalty. Danielsson scored 2 power play goals from the point in Sweden's quarterfinal win over Canada.

    20:30
Quick shot for Daniel Sedin on the power play, save Raanta and the puck is cleared.

    20:18
Penalty early in the period, with the play in the corner in the Finnish zone, tournament scoring leader Petri Kontiola tripped Henrik Sedin and goes off. Kontiola was largely invisible in the first period while Henrik was not.

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

Teams are back on the ice and the 2nd period will begin shortly.

An interesting first period, with lots of intensity to start with. Finland got the better chances early, but then Sweden took over in the middle part of the period with a couple of power plays and scored the game's opening goal, thanks to Henrik Sedin's shot/pass that re-directed in off the leg of Loui Eriksson. Finland got a couple of late power plays, and while they were able to get some shots, there was nothing really threatening as the Swedish PK did a good job.

Shots on goal in the 1st period: Finland 12, Sweden 11.

2nd period begins at 15:48 CEST, 09:48 EDT.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    18:30
Sweden doing a good job on the kill, they ice it for the second time.

    17:54
Just as the Swedes kill off one penalty, they're going right back to the PK as Henrik Tallinder goes off for roughing. A chance for Finland to keep up the pressure.

    16:51
Sami Lepisto with the shot from the point, save Enroth, who's suddenly busy after a long stretch with nothing.

    15:52
Joel Lundqvist is assessed the only penalty on the play for high sticking, so the Finns get their first chance on the power play.

    15:52
Another Finnish chance, this time Korpikoski with the shot off the rush, Enroth holds on and we've got some pushing and shoving after the whistle. Maybe some penalties.

    15:28
Finally Finland with a bit of pressure. Teemu Laakso with a long shot from the point, caught and held by Enroth.

    14:20
Loui Ericsson with another shot in close, pad save Raanta, and the Sedins going to work again . . .

    13:35
Danielsson eludes a check along the boards and gets a shot from a tight angle.

    12:46
Landeskog with a one-timer slapper off the draw, stick save Raanta.

    12:42
The puck is deflected out of play in the Finnish zone. The Finns really back on their heels right now.

    12:00
The Sedins and Ericsson have owned the middle part of this period and they're buzzing again in the Finnish zone right now, Raanta kicks out a shot by Ericsson.

    11:02
Sweden going back to the attack after the goal. The Sedins back on the ice for another faceoff in the attacking zone.

    10:33
    Goal for Team Sweden!
Sedin magic. Henrik gets the puck in the corner and initially looked like he was going to try to find his brother with a pass at the far side of the slot, but his attempt hit the leg of LOUI ERIKSSON in front of the net and went in. Assists: Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin.

    09:50
The Sedins on Sweden's first power play unit with Loui Ericsson, and they get a chance right off the faceoff but it's rejected and cleared.

    09:40
Sweden is going to the power play for the second time, as Ilari Melhart goes off for cross-checking.

They just replayed the Hagman chance. Enroth did a good job to slide across and Hagman tried to rush the shot before he could get across and didn't get good wood on it.

    09:18
    Offside Finland.

    06:53
First great chance of the game. First captain Lasse Kukkonen shot from the point for Finland and Enroth stopped it, then Niklas Hagman appeared to have an open net to shoot the rebound into and missed.

    06:36
Swedes trying to apply pressure in the Finnish zone but not getting any open shooting lanes. An attempt is finally deflected out of play. Faceoff upcoming in the Finnish zone.

    05:17
Finland back to full strength, shot from the point by Laakso kicked out by Enroth.

    03:23
Hjalmarsson to Fransson late in the Swedish power play, he misfires.

    02:33
Finland gets a shorthanded break but it results in a big collision that dislodges the Swedish net. Faceoff inside with 1:18 left in the power play.

    01:51
Now we're getting the game's first penalty. Finland's Janne Jalasvaara gets called for interference in the corner in his own zone. Power play Sweden.

    01:30
Physical start to this game, as expected. Sweden's Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche already in two big collisions.

    01:00
    Icing Sweden.

    00:30
Finland's Lauri Korpikoski gets the game's first chance and fires high from the slot.

    00:01
    Game started.

The national anthems are complete and the opening faceoff is moments away.

The teams are on the ice. Finland is the designated home team and will get last change. They're wearing white with double blue trim, blue pants and helmets. Sweden is wearing all blue uniforms with yellow trim.

We've got one of international hockey's great rivalries in the first of two semifinal games at this 2013 IIHF World Championship. The two host nations, Sweden and Finland, clash in Stockholm to decide who goes to the championship game.

Sweden struggled scoring goals initially in the group stage, going 5-2 and finishing 3rd, but the late addition of some NHLers, most notably Daniel and Henrik Sedin, helped them greatly in their quarterfinal win over Canada--the Sedins combined on two third-period power play goals, both scored by Nicklas Danielsson, and Sweden eventually won in a shootout. Through 8 games, they are led with 6 points each by Fredrik Pettersson (3+3) and Louie Ericsson (2+4). Jhonas Enroth is perhaps the biggest reason this team is here, with his play against Canada in the first two periods and the shootout especially. He has the best save percentage in the tournament, tied with Canada's Mike Smith at .944. He has a 1.41 GAA and 1 shutout in 5 games.

The Finns' ride through the group stage went much more smoothly, as they won their group with a 6-1 record, losing only to the Americans. In the quarters, they built up an early lead against Slovakia before holding on to win 4-3. They boast three of the tournament's top 11 scorers, including overall leader Petri Kontiola with 15 points (8+7), Juhamatti Aaltonen with 11 (4+7), and Janne Pesonen with 8 (2+6). Antti Raanta has played 5 of 8 games in goal with a 1.99 GAA, .934 save percentage and 1 shutout.

Welcome. This semifinal game starts at 15:00 CEST (local time in Stockholm), 16:00 EEST, 13:00 GMT, 10:00 EDT.
