Sweden opened up the tournament against the Czech Republic and impressed many with the manner of their emphatic 4-2 victory. They then went on to beat Switzerland 1-0 and Latvia 5-3 before the knockout stages, and they didn't let up there. The tournament surprise outfit Slovenia got a 5-0 hammering, before in a tight semi final with Finland the Swedes came through with a 2-1 victory.
Canada started a bit slower with a pedestrian 3-1 triumph over the Norwegians but they got going with a confidence boosting 6-0 win over Austria. They claimed first place in Group B with beating Finland 2-1, but despite only just squeaking past Latvia 2-1 in the quarter finals they beat their fierce rivals the USA 1-0 to have the chance to defend the title that they won four years ago in Vancouver.
