This game has been a long time coming and, make no mistake, it is huge. The Lions enter the game with 90 points, tied for third place in the Western Conference with Donbass Donetsk -- Wednesday´s opponent. The winner of the game will have sole possession of third place and have a leg up on finishing in the top four of the conference, and may even set their sights on second-place SKA St Petersburg, who have 98 points. The loser will have to start worrying about the teams in the rear-view mirror -- Dinamo Riga is 3 points back with 87 points, Medveščak Zagreb is 5 back with 85, and CSKA Moscow is 7 back with 83. With four games left on the schedule, both of these teams could potentially finish as high as second place or as low as seventh.
The Lions won 12 of their last 15 games before the break, including five straight at home. Donbass went into the break hot, too, winning seven of their last nine. Since their last game, a 3-2 shootout win on home ice against Atlant, two of their players went to Sochi -- goaltender Ján Laco with Slovakia and defenceman Oskars Bartulis with Latvia.
While Laco represented his country, it will likely be Canadian Michael Leighton who gets the start in goal on Wednesday. He´s played in 39 of Donbass´s 50 games this season with a 1.76 goals-against average, .932 save percentage and 5 shutouts. As a team, Donbass has 8 shutouts this season, which is a large reason why they are the best defensive team in the league with just 92 goals against.
On the offensive side, Donbass is tied for 9th in the league with 130 goals scored. Czech Lukáš Kašpar leads the team in goals (16), assists (20) and points (36). He´s followed by Maxim Yakutsenya with 30 points and Yevgeni Dadonov and Canadian Randy Robitaille with 28 each. Other dangerous forwards include Finn Teemu Laine, Czech Václav Nedorost and Ukrainian team captain Ruslan Fedotenko. The defensive corps is led by Canadian Clay Wilson with 22 points and Slovak Peter Podhradský with 21 and a team-best plus-22 rating.
While Donbass´s plus-38 goal difference is fourth-best in the league, Lev is pretty close to that at plus-37. That starts in goal, where Petri Vehanen has been brillant this year with a 1.71 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and 4 shutouts. The offence has been spread around -- Martin Thörnberg and Jiří Sekáč are co-scoring leaders with 26 points, followed by Novotný and Justin Azevedo with 24 each. Next is defenceman Martin Ševc with 21 points, and Finnish d-man Topi Jaakola has a team-best plus-17 rating.
It was a long time ago, but Lev opened their regular season in Donetsk way back on September 8. In that game, the Lions got goals from Calle Ridderwall and Michal Řepík to take a 2-0 lead before Donbass came back to win 3-2 on an overtime goal by Yakutsenya. Unlike a lot of KHL teams, the rosters of these two teams have not changed significantly since that time.

That was quick! From a battle for the puck in the corner, Jiri Novotny fed JUSTIN AZEVEDO, who was all alone in front of the net and he made no mistake, one-timing it inside the post from close range. Assist: Jiri Novotny.
Lev with possession in the Donbass zone, Zackrisson at the half-boards passed back to the point to TOPI JAAKOLA, and his high wrister found its way through traffic and past Leighton for the second Lev goal. Assist: Patrik Zackrisson.
Donbass is on the board with a shorthanded goal. Nedorost won the draw back to OSKARS BARTULIS, and his slapper hit a Lev player and changed direction, giving Vehanen no chance to react. Assist: Vaclav Nedorost.
Lev had the first 5 shots in this game and Donbass the next 5. Shots now 5-5.
