The evening game between Rayo Vallecano and Celta de Vigo is a crucial one in the fight of the two teams to avoid relegation.

Home team Rayo Vallecano were 14th before the matchday with 33 points in 31 games, with a three point advantage towards the relegation zone. After being in a very difficult situation throughout the whole season, Rayo were able to leave the relegation zone after 13 of 15 points in the games against Valencia CF (H, 1-0), Real Sociedad (A, 3-2), UD Almería (H, 3-1), Real Valladolid (A, 1-1) and CA Osasuna (H, 1-0) before being chanceless in the last away match against Real Madrid (0-5).
