HC Sibir Novosibirsk
Tuesday 09.09.2014, 14:00 • Arena Kuznetskikh Metallurgov • KHL

With that dramatic overtime goal Sibir have claimed a hard fought 3:2 win over the Siberian rivals Metallurg Novokuznetsk! After going ahead through Dmitriy Kugryshev's goal early on Sibir then conceded two quick fire goals from Ansel Galimov and Alexander Romanov, and it took until the final three minutes for Maxim Ignatovich to tie the game up. Sibir's Dmitriy Kugryshev then grabbed his second of the day, as he tapped home to give the visitors two points for the win, and leave Metallurg with one. Thanks for following the game with us, and join me again tomorrow for more highly exciting KHL action! (16:41:35)

    Game over.

    61:28
    Goal for Sibir!
Wow, just look at how the away fans are celebrating! Sibir have very promptly finished the game, Metallurg were just so deflated after conceding late! The hosts poorly cough up the puck to Alexey Kopeikin who by the left faceoff circle splays it across to the slot, where DMITRIY KUGRYSHEV expertly flicks it past the goalkeeper! It's 3:2! Assists- Alexey Kopeikin

    60:10
Sibir get about setting themselves up in their opponents' zone, Jarno Koskiranta wrists in from distance but Metallurg's outstanding performer Ilya Sorokin clutches

    60:01
    Overtime began.

It is indeed overtime! We will now have an extra five minutes of play, and if no one can score, then penalty shots will be coming our way. Both teams have already guaranteed themselves at least a point though!

Statistics after the initial 60 minutes of play:

    Shots: 32-93
    Shots on target: 51

    59:58
With both teams waiting for overtime the buzzer is about to sound! An extra five minutes are coming our way here in Novokuznetsk!

    58:18
Both teams are now back to full strength. Metallurg will be very disappointed to having conceded so late, but Sibir have been knocking on the door! You have to say that with their momentum the visitors are the slight favourites now!

    56:31
    Goal for Sibir!
We have late drama here, as Sibir finally have their equaliser that you have to say they deserve! MAXIM IGNATOVICH swings around from the left flank to the center, fires in and through traffic it sneaks into the right hand corner! It's a tied game at 2:2!

    56:18
The numbers have been promptly evened up here though, as Metallurg's Vitaly Zotov has been penalised for hitting with the stick

    56:08
This really isn't the time for Sibir to start collecting needless penalties but that's exactly what they've done here, Sergey Shumakov for checking to the head is the guilty party

    55:04
Metallurg looked very solid on that penalty kill, not giving Sibir any openings whatsoever, and it's a five on five game again

    54:21
Dmitriy Monya winds up for a pacy effort just past the blue line, it really is arrowed but home defenders manage to deflect it up and out of play before it can get to Ilya Sorokin!

    53:04
Metallurg have given away a potentially very important powerplay here now though, as Vladimir Malinovskiy has been penalised for slashing!

    52:18
Icing is now committed by Sibir. Metallurg have calmed down after not having any of the puck earlier in the period, and their opponents just look to be tiring slightly

    50:58
Sibir are now back at full strength, but with the final ten minutes already upon us time is starting to run against them now!

    50:00
Koskiranta! Shorthanded off a faceoff draw on the left Jarno Koskiranta takes on a testing wrist shot, is gets deflected up into the air but on the rebound Ilya Sorokin makes a fantastic right pad save to keep his team ahead!

    48:58
You can feel the momentum starting to switch here, as Sibir's Oleg Gubin has now been punished for checking an opponent with his stick

    46:47
Sibir have indeed escaped further damage there and they're back at full strength, but Metallurg will be regretting having let those gaping chances pass them by!

    46:34
Fairchild! Twisting around by the right hand post Cade Fairchild whips the puck across goal, but no one can get a telling touch! And just seconds earlier from the doorstep Mikko Koskinen had his right post smacked, that could have maybe sealed it there for Metallurg!

    44:47
But out of nothing the hosts have been gifted a powerplay chance to take the pressure of their shoulders, as Sibir's Sergey Shumakov has been punished for hooking! That won't please the visitors at all!

    44:31
Icing is committed by Metallurg. At the moment that's really the only way that they can't get it out of their own zone

    43:51
Metallurg simply can't get out of their own zone! But it has to be said that their opponents aren't finding any spaces to get shots away!

    42:27
The visitors get set up deep in Metallurg's zone for what seems an age, but eventually the hosts manage to clear. It will be hard for them to hang on for the whole of the stanza!

    40:10
The third and deciding period is underway! The pressure is on Sibir to keep the initiative, they had an incredible amount of attempts on goal during that second set of 20 minutes!

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Statistics after the first two periods:

    Shots: 23-64
    Shots on target: 12-33
    Faceoffs: 18-26
    Hits: 18-9
    Penalty minutes: 12-8

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

    39:31
It's now the final seconds of the second stanza, with the third promising to be a very tense affair!

    38:31
Alexander Komaristiy dumps the puck in from deep, and Mikko Koskinen takes no risks with freezing for a faceoff. He has been a spectator for the vast majority of the period!

    37:27
A neat backhand pass sets up the open Igor Ozhiganov directly on the right faceoff circle, he has a lot of space for himself but going for the near corner the goalkeeper gets himself in the way!

    35:29
Metallurg have survived that particular storm and they're back at full strength! Ilya Sorokin is having a serious amount of work to do!

    34:29
Bobrov! Mikko Koskinen with a fantastic pass all the away from his own crease finds the open Viktor Bobrov skating clean through, but pulling in from the right he slaps into Ilya Sorokin's chest! That's a brilliant save from the young netminder!

    33:29
Sibir's pressure is starting to grow now! And Artyom Garifulin of Metallurg has been forced into giving up a penalty, as he has been punished for slashing

    32:11
Gubin! What a perfect chance for Sibir to get themselves right back into it! It's a two on one for the hosts, Sergey Shumakov feeds Oleg Gubin open at the left hand post but somehow he finds the goalkeeper's pads and not the net! He had to score there!

    31:54
Alexey Kosourov skates away down the left flank, backhands across the face of goal but Mikko Koskinen is first to it and he freezes

    30:02
Sibir have been the more energetic in the period so far, and Metallurg are trying to create only on sharp and pacy counterattacks

    28:02
Patrick Hersley just keeping the puck inside Metallurg's zone wrists looking for someone to make a telling deflection, but it falls into the netminder's waiting grasp

    25:31
Play has been stopped here as Metallurg's Dmitriy Maltsev is having to be helped off the ice after being smashed up against the boards but Maxim Ignatovich! The home fans want a penalty but the referees saw no foul play there!

    25:05
A wrister through heavy traffic is put in on net, and Ilya Sorokin just emerging out of his goal holds on expertly

    23:14
It's now a five on five hockey game again with Sibir having been solid defensively during that penalty kill

    22:43
But shorthanded Sibir almost tie the score up again! Ilya Sorokin in the Metallurg has to make two excellent saves up close glove side as his defence in front of him caved open!

    21:32
The hosts are back at full strength and they'll want to take advantage of being on the powerplay themselves now!

    21:14
That Sibir powerplay has been cut short though, as their defenceman Vyacheslav Belov has been sent to sit down for two minutes for holding his opponent

    20:10
Here we go in the second stanza, and for a further 01:32 Sibir are still on the powerplay!

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

Statistics after the opening period of play:

    Shots: 12-24
    Shots on target: 9-8

    Hits: 10-7
    Penalty minutes: 10-6

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    19:46
It's now the final seconds of an end to end first period!

    19:32
Before the period is out we've got another penalty here, as Metallurg's Alexander Makarov has been penalised for tripping

    19:03
Both teams are of course back at full strength as icing is committed by Metallurg who are looking full of energy

    17:44
Stoa! Ryan Stoa finds the puck rolling to him at the high slot, he slaps in first time but the goaltender shows excellent reactions to turn it wide!

    16:39
Sibir move offside. They need to get their confidence back again, and Metallurg's players are now trying their luck against goaltender Mikko Koskinen from any distance

    15:44
We now have a fight on our hands, as Sibir's Igor Ozhiganov takes the hosts' Ansel Galimov to the floor! And both have duly been sent to the penalty box for roughing

    15:35
This is really turning into a very eventful opening period of play! And just after conceding those two rather unexpected goals Sibir have been handed a powerplay chance to get their game going again, as Ryan Stoa has been penalised for slashing

    15:05

    12:43
Sibir move offside just as they were getting set up deep inside their opponents' zone. They have been the better so far, but both teams look to be wanting to play on the counter

    10:41
Igor Ozhiganov is dished the puck at the high slot on an incisive Sibir counterattack, he one times it but it drifts wide of the left hand post! The pace of the game is high!

Referees: Yakov Deev, Evgeniy Romasko, Dmitriy Sivov, Sergey Shelyanin.

Metallurg fared better in their first game though, as a 1:0 triumph away to Avangard Omsk has raised optimism in Novokuznetsk that their team can challenge for a playoff spot this time around. Last season they failed to make the post season, whereas Sibir went all the way to the Eastern Conference semi finals.

This will be Metallurg's third game of the season, and rather surprisingly this is already their second game against Sibir. Just a few days ago these two met in Novosibirsk, where Sibir completely thrashed today's hosts 6:1. That game was Sibir's only one in the season so far, but they can expect a harder task today as Metallurg's fans have waited a long time for the KHL to get started again!

Good afternoon and welcome to this KHL regular season match between Metallurg Novokuznetsk and Sibir Novosibirsk. This is Metallurg's home opener of the new season, but these two already know each other very well.

    Welcome. Game starts at 14:00.
