Switzerland started in group A which was designed for the four highest ranked women's national teams. There they lost the matches against women's hockey super powers Canada (0-5) and USA (0-9) with large results but were able to keep the game close against Finland (3-4 OT) and to earn at least a point. They missed direct qualification for the semifinals – which went to Canada and the USA – but they managed to beat hosts Russia (2-0) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they faced again Canada (1-3) but despite showing a great effort the underdogs were thrown out of the gold medal race.
For Sweden the group B with the lower ranked women's national teams started with a win against Japan (1-0) before they beat Germany (4-0) in the decisive match to qualify for the quarterfinals. The last group match though they lost against home team Russia (1-3). In the quarterfinals the Swedes managed to beat favourites and archrivals Finland (4-2) after a great third period comeback. What followed though was the expected loss in the semifinals against USA (1-6).
Although starting in the lower ranked group B the Swedish women are in the position as favourites in this game for the 3rd spot where they could reach their third Olympic medal after bronze in Salt Lake City in 2002 and silver in Turin in 2006. For Switzerland it would be their first medal. After a 7th and a 5th spot in the previous two Olympic tournaments reaching the semifinals already is the biggest Olympic success for the Swiss women!
