Canada2
3:2 (0:0, 0:1, 2:1 - 1:0)
USA
Thursday 20.02.2014, 18:00 • Bolshoi Ice Dome, Sochi • Olympics - Women

The emotions of the two teams right now have to be amazing. The Americans had a 2-0 lead with less than 4:00 left in the game, even hit the goalpost on an empty-net attempt that would have finished it for sure, but Canada came back, and won it on a power play in overtime for their fourth straight Olympic gold medal. (20:56:15)

    Game over.

    68:10
    Goal for Team Canada!
They worked the puck around on the power play and again it's MARIE-PHILIP POULIN, and she had all the time in the world to put it into the open side before Vetter could get across to stop her, and end possibly the most incredible game in women's hockey history. Power-play goal.

    Assist: Laura Fortino.

    67:31
The call is Hilary Knight for cross-checking, but both Wickenheiser and Canadian coach Kevin Dineen, and probably most people watching can't believe this isn't a penalty shot. In any event, it's a 4-on-3 power play for Canada for :29.

    67:31
A bizzare sequence there where a missed chance for the Americans results in a break for Haley Wickenheiser the other way. She's brought down from behind and a penalty's coming, but not a penalty shot!

    66:44
    Offside USA.

    66:15
They get the puck right off the draw, Bozek with the shot right on Szabados, and Jocelyn Lamoureux takes a whack at it and she's getting called for slashing.

We'll play 4-on-4 for 1:55, barring a goal or another penalty.

    66:09
Timeout USA. They're going for the win in OT.

    66:09
Fry circles the Canadian net, centres for Schlaper for the one-timer and she's hit hard while digging for the rebound. Penalty to Canada coming. Catherine Ward for cross-checking.

    65:20
Slapper from Jenner, I don't think it got through to Vetter.

    64:15
Spooner driving hard again but she's headed off this time without getting a shot.

    62:47
Finally a backhander by Hefford and a glove save by Vetter for the first whistle of overtime.

    61:25
Now Spooner drives to the net again for Canada, denied by Vetter. Both these teams with their feet on the gas to start OT.

    61:00
Americans going for it, scramble in the crease, finally cleared away.

    60:35
US with the puck down low, Knight attempts a wraparound, doesn't go.

    60:15
Johnson with the early shot wide.

    60:01
    Overtime began.

The teams are on the ice and overtime will start soon.

Wow, what a finish to that third period! Canada looked like they couldn't get anything going, but then got a lucky bounce to get on the board, and that got them the energy they needed and they came right back with the equalizer with :55 left in regulation time.

As this is the gold medal final, we have a full intermission followed by a 20-minute 4-on-4 sudden-death overtime period. If nobody scores, then this gold medal game will be decided in a shootout.

Canada is now on a high, but the Americans, who were so close to wrapping up their first gold in women's hockey since 1998, will have to regroup and come out strong in overtime.

Shots on goal in the 3rd period (and game): Canada 10 (27), USA 8 (24).

    Quality scoring chances: Canada 2 (4), USA 2 (5).

Overtime begins at 22:38 MSK, 20:38 CET, 14:38 EST, 11:38 PST.

    60:00
    3rd period finished.
