They worked the puck around on the power play and again it's MARIE-PHILIP POULIN, and she had all the time in the world to put it into the open side before Vetter could get across to stop her, and end possibly the most incredible game in women's hockey history. Power-play goal.
Assist: Laura Fortino.
We'll play 4-on-4 for 1:55, barring a goal or another penalty.
As this is the gold medal final, we have a full intermission followed by a 20-minute 4-on-4 sudden-death overtime period. If nobody scores, then this gold medal game will be decided in a shootout.
Canada is now on a high, but the Americans, who were so close to wrapping up their first gold in women's hockey since 1998, will have to regroup and come out strong in overtime.

Amazing! The puck is deflected from the corner, off the stick of Vetter and out front to MARIE-PHILLIP POULIN, who makes no mistake and ties this gold-medal game!
Assists: Rebecca Johnston, Haley Irwin.
Shannon Szabados is already on the bench for a 6th attacker.
It wasn't such a dangerous looking Canadian rush but BRIANNE JENNER's stick was tipped as she shot from the faceoff dot, then the puck hit the pants of a US player in front and went inside the post to get Canada on the board.
Assist: Meaghan Mikkelson.
As the power play was winding down, Stack worked the puck from down low, to Knight at the half-boards, and she found ALEX CARPENTER at the far post, who re-directed it in. Power-play goal.

The call is, indeed, too many players on the ice, so Canada goes to the power play with a chance to tie this game.
A blind Canadian clearing attempt caused the US to regain the puck in the neutral zone and captain MEGHAN DUGGAN finished the play by firing a high wrister from the top of the circle that found the top corner through a crowd.
Assist: Jocelyn Lamoureux.
Shots now tied 13-13 just past the halfway mark of this game.

To make the games more interesting and to reduce the gap between the two North American teams and the rest of the Olympic participants there was a new format introduced. The four highest ranked women's national teams played in group A while the four lower ranked teams played in group B. While the first two teams of group A could qualify directly for the semifinals, the other two group A teams and the two best teams of group B qualified for the quarterfinals. As expected Canada and the USA took the first two spots for a direct ticket to the semis.
For Canada it was an easy walk through in the group stage against Switzerland (5-0) and Finland (3-0) before defeating archrivals USA (3-2). In the semifinals they met Switzerland (3-1) again but after a fast three goal lead did everything to save energy.
Team USA beat Finland (3-1) and Switzerland (9-0) in the group stage before losing the derby against Canada (2-3). In the semifinals they faced the only remaining team of group B Sweden (6-1) but never left them a chance.
Canada earned silver in Nagano in 1998 before getting gold in Salt Lake City in 2002, in Turin in 2006 and in Vancouver in 2010. Team USA won the first edition of the women's hockey Olympic tournament in Nagano before getting silver in Salt Lake City, bronze in Turin and again silver in Vancouver.
Both teams showed all their class throughout the tournament and when they met in group stage the game couldn't have been closer. We can expect a completely open gold medal game of the two strongest women's hockey sides in the world!
