Canada also can be happy taking three points in the game, but they have to be disappointed with their power play and the five penalties they took on the game. Norway's only score came with the extra man and if the penalties continue, Canada could be in trouble.

A dominant final 40 minutes for Canada, but little to show for it in the box score. This could spell trouble with Finland still to play in group play.

Though they lost, Norway has to be happy with the play of Haugen between the pipes. If they can continue to play as physical as they did in the first period, they could upset a team or two over the next few games.

Norway pulled within one goal, finishing a power play chance leftover from the previous period, but Canada would answer quickly with another of their own. Canada continued to dominate in the third, but has only goal to show for it.

Shots on goal were 38-20 in favor of Norway.

In the second period, Canada asserted their dominance defensively. It was more than 17 minutes before Norway registered their first shot of the period and were outshot 14-2 when it was all said and done.

Canada regroups after a first period where Norway dominated physically and had Canada playing their style of hockey. The teams were even at 0-0 after 20 minutes and the shots on goal were nearly even for both clubs (9-8 for Canada).

    60:00
    Game over.

    59:15
Canada excellent on the penalty kill today, giving Norway no chance to setup with the extra attacker.

    58:21
Bergeron goes to the box for a trip on the faceoff. Norway calls a timeout to organize a goal opportunity here on the power play/

    58:00
Norway pushing hard for another goal here, leading to an offsides penalty. They will need a quick one if they are serious about tying the score.

    56:00
Canada tying up Norway in the neutral zone, but not advancing aggressively to score. both teams seems settled on the current score.

    54:17
Both teams are at full strength after some short 4-on-4 action.

    54:01
Both teams are at even strength, but playing four-on-four with the offsetting Kunitz-Boksansen minors.

    52:17
Kunitz in the box for slashing and Bonsaksen tries to rip his head off in retribution. The minor penalties off set and we have some 4 on 3 hockey.

    51:01
Canada maintaining possession in the zone, but not generating any shots. 1:00 to go in the power play.

    51:02
Forsberg in the box for Norway after interfering with Corey Perry. Canada has a chance to extend their lead.

    49:30
Haugen has saved 27 of 30, which is a pretty decent statistic, but Norway would not be in this game if he was not playing much better than that stat shows.

    48:00
Pietrangelo has had some opportunities this game, but he cannot beat Haugen. Canada still dominant, though not adding to their lead.

Doughty (1G, 1A) and Bergeron (2A) both with two points for Canada.

    46:00
Norway is back to finding it difficult to generate any offense on this tough Canadian defense.

Norway defenseman Mats Trygg is being helped back to the locker room with what appears to be a leg injury.

    44:00
Norway looks a bit deflated after Canada gets their third. They are sitting in their own zone on defense and are being peppered now by Canada.

    41:47
    Goal for Team Canada!

Doughty gets a pass between the circles and makes a nice move in approach. His backhander goes over Haugen and Canada quickly extends the lead back to two goals.

    40:22
    Goal for Team Norway!

We have game! Price plays the puck badly behind his own net, but he gets back in position. Unfortunately, he has two skaters on each side of him and Olimb in front of him. Olimb lets one go and it beats Price. Norway within 1.

Norway with a little bit of power play time left here to start the third.

    40:01
    Start of 3rd period.

Credit to Canada there for focusing on defense and not trying to go back and forth with Norway. The result was a dominant defensive effort and a two goal lead.

Canada picks up two penalties in the final four minutes and Norway will have 1:33 on the power play when we resume action.

Canada manhandles Norway that period, but only has two goals to show for outshooting the Norwegians 14-2. The first shot by Norway came with less than three minutes remaining in the second period.

    40:00
    2nd period finished.

    20:27
Keith in the box for holding. Norway will have a short chance to end the period with the extra man.

Norway registers their first and only shot of the period on the previous power play.

    38:05
    Both teams at full strength.

    37:30
Canada not allowing Norway to setup on the penalty kill--keeping them on the boards and doing well to clear the zone.

    36:03
Norway on the power play. Sharp in the box for hooking.

    35:19
    Goal for Team Canada!

Benn comes in the zone to the right of Haugen and takes a nice pass on the tape from Bergeron. He steadies the puck and lets one rip. The puck crawls up the blade of the Norway keeper's stick, over the shoulder and into the net. A little luck on that one after missing some on the Towes redirection earlier.

    34:30
Canada still maintaining dominance--still failing to get anything else on the scoreboard or to even draw a penalty.

Canada dominating on faceoffs, winning 26 of 36 (72.2%)

    32:30
Norway's captain Tollefsen and early highlight for Norway. He is really finishing his checks and disrupting Canada's attack.

    31:00
Norway actually has not registered a shot on goal in the second period so far. The earlier report at the five minute mark was not counted officially.

    30:40
Several opportunities there on Haugen for Canada, but they cannot slip one past. A redirection from Towes hits the inside of the post and bounces wide. No one cannot get it back on goal. Unlucky there for Canada.

    29:30
Norway on their heels a bit here. Canada looks like that have a power play and Norway is not spending any time putting pucks on Price.

    28:00
Canada has come alive. Unfortunately, many have had similar close up chances, like Corey Price just had from point blank range, but they cannot score inside so far.

    26:20
    Goal for Team Canada!

Nothing special there. Weber lets a slapper go and Haugen cannot find it. No one in front of the net and three defenders near the path of that screamer. Canada takes the lead!

    26:00
Canada really locking down defensively here. They are pushing Norway wide in their zone and not allowing Price to see anything.

    24:20
It took more than 4 minutes for Norway to get their first shot of the period and it was a quality one. Still no score.

    23:00
Norway back under control after being sloppy and giving Canada some scoring opportunities. The red sweaters are starting to generate some much needed momentum.

    21:30
Canada getting a couple good opportunities there, but cannot score. It is Piterangelo with another try and a couple others. Nothing going in for Canada though.

    20:01
    Start of 2nd period.

Both teams are on the ice and we are ready to get underway for some 2nd period action.

Canada is the more skilled team, but they have to be disappointed that they are being beat physically by Norway. They will need to grind this game rather than try to turn it into a race or they could be in for a surprise.

We will return after the first intermission.

Canada looks good early, but Norway gets them to play into their preferred style. The result: an even game so far. Score is 0-0 and the shots were 9-8 with the edge to Canada.

    20:00
    1st period finished.

    19:30
Canada's penalty kill looks fantastic. They really frustrate Norway with their aggressiveness. Both teams at full strength.

    17:19
Getzlaf gets caught flat footed at his own blue line and has to stick his leg out to stop a rushing Norwegian player. Norway gets a power play with a little over two minutes left to play in the first.

    17:00
Norway is playing the body more, dropping down to block shits and Canada is still playing a high powered offensive charge. It almost worked when Norway's Bonsaksen misplayed a puck behind his own net, but the score remains tied.

    15:00
It is Doughty that time for Canada taking a shot from the top of the left circle after getting a feed from behind the net. Haugen not fooled by it. Eventually, Norway will have to stop that pass from getting through or it will lead to a goal.

    14:00
Olimb has an empty side of the net, but cannot twist his body around to get a stick on it. Price was out of position. Still tied up.

    13:30
The open game being played is not beneficial for the Canadian side. Norway looks much more comfortable in transition. They also are playing more physical against Canada. It is safe to assume that turning this game into a track meet was not the game plan for Canada.

    12:00
Norway getting the better chances in this back and forth game. Pietrangelo lets one go from the blue line that completely misses. Back the other way, the Norwegian skater gets a close up chance on Price. The pace is playing into Norway's hands.

    10:30
Norway gets a good try there after Canada carries their power play momentum after both teams get to full strength. Ask and Holos are confident to come back and get a chance of their own.

    09:04
Both teams are at full strength,

    08:34
Tavares stickhandles nicely and sends a pass to Crosby. It sits on Sid's backhand, but he puts it to the front before flicking one on Haugen. The result is a save. Best chance of the game so far for either team.

    08:04
Canada having a hard time getting anything going here. Geztlaf cannot keep the puck in the zone; bringing it back in across the blue line leads to an offsides call.

    07:04
Norway is called for too many men on the ice. Canada will have their first power play opportunity.

Toleffsen is playing mean for Norway. Some good checks so far!

    06:50
Carter with a chance there for Canada. They are really trying to work something from the circle to the left of Haugen. The puck is saved and the games stays tied up.

    06:00
Norway trying to take control with some opportunities. Tavares makes a lazy pass and goes to the bench, while Norway makes a charge at Price. The 3 on 2 try comes up empty.

    04:30
Canada having some difficulty now getting into Norway's zone, but they are not making it easy for Norway either with at least three guys waiting on defense. Both teams playing a chess match in the neutral zone.

    03:00
Canada looking to go to the left of Haugen behind the net and work a centering pass/one-timer. Two attempts at that play in the early going.

    01:30
Canada looks like the better team early. Very fast and getting the most time in the other team's one early on.

    00:01
    Game started.

The referees and teams are taking the ice.

With Finland earning three points today, Canada and Norway will need to keep pace if they are planning to skip the quarterfinal qualification match.

Canada faces the same task as the higher skilled team. They need to gel early as Norway will look to use their familiarity to get an early lead. If they can get a big enough lead and get a couple lucky bounces, an upset is possible. However, the other teams that were supposed to win did so handily when they finally were able to lock in.

By chemistry, I mean those players that play together regularly in the same league or leagues, particularly in Europe. The national sides with more NHL and KHL skaters have allowed the underdogs to be competitive early on. Luckily for the high powered sides, they did not have to face stiff competition early on.

What we have seen today so far is that the side that has more chemistry has kept pace with their better skilled opponents early, but the better team has pulled away. Austria was up 2-1 versus Finland early, the US finished the first period only up 1 to 0 over Slovakia, and Slovenia was able to get within one goal of the Russian side in the second period.

The final game of the day between Olympic Group B competitors Canada and Norway will get underway in 10 minutes.

    Welcome. Game starts at 18:00.
